Will the Army let me continue to serve, or will I be medically retired, after having a medical device put in my body?

A medical procedure call dorsal root ganglion or DRG for short will be put in my body. I just wanted to know will the Army let me continue to serve with 7 years left until I retire or will I be medical retire? The doctor told me if I was Air Force I would be medical retire. But he couldn’t tell me about the Army side.

I suspect it depends on your job/MOS and whether the Army feels you can continue to do it after the surgery.

SSG Ervin Williams AR 40-501 would tell you. Chapter 3 is the Retentiôn chapter.
Apparently we all have one. Look in the regulation for the disorder/issue with the DRG. https://academic.oup.com/painmedicine/article/15/10/1669/1939615

You should be able to go through a medical retention board. If they decide to retain you keep yourself in as good of shape as possible and follow their orders to the T. If you are nonretained, collect all of your medical files and bring them straight to a VA rep and start your rating process. Best of luck to you. I hope everything works out for you.
