With less than 1% of the United States population joining the service, what are your thoughts on those who do not, but are fully capable?

When I joined the Army I did it to be part of something bigger then myself. Not because I needed anything from it, but because I wanted to do something selfless. I also knew that I would enjoy being a soldier because I loved guns and the outdoors. Before I joined I began to educate myself on exactly why we were at war. I found that maybe a handful of my fellow brothers and sisters in arms also really knew why we were in Afghanistan. To them it did not matter. It's what we were to do. After reading this article I can only wonder what are your thoughts? Do you feel this former comrade is wrong or right writing this?

SGT Sara Hodgkiss It is a choice and everyone is not suited for the military even if they are capable.

I have to agree with Sara on this one, being an all volunteer force is what makes the 1% unique. Even those capable that could've joined, doesn't mean all could've done their jobs and adapted to military culture and society enough to maintain unit integrity and moral to accomplish the mission

Excellent point. I knew several guys from high school that joined and they all went AWOL. They were all Marines, I don't know if that is a coincidence or not. But they were clearly not suited for the military.

SMSgt Thor Merich - My oldest son came home on leave with 3 of his Marine friends and on the way back to 29 stumps they went awol and he wouldn't go with them ,they left him in Las Vegas and he had to get a bus back.I don't think they were suited for the military,Marine or any other.

The Army is not for everyone, and not everyone for the Army. As a recruiter it is frustrating. As a parent, and my wife also a veteran, we have decided we will not pay for college for our child who is eligible to join any branch. But that's just us.
