Hello, I am currently going through a small dilemma. My goal is to become a Warrant Officer (255A/N). I hold 2 Cisco Certifications, Sec+, A+, & working on completing my bachelors in IT with Networking as a focus, I have prior IT EXP. As a 25B, the two CW2 in my S6 stated that I should look into re-classing to 17C. I’m sure I'd make SGT faster but not sure if that’s the career I want to go with.

Any path you take that is related to security will help you. I was talking with a CW4 in my unit and he said there is a need for good 2LT's in NetSec and an over strength of WO's. I would shoot for 17C (what I'm reclassing into next month). I would focus on one thing (either a language or a certification). I had a problem with wanting to learn everything at once and overwhelming myself.

That is still my struggle too! I want to learn everything! Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way. I agree people should focus on learning a language or cert. I'll be attending the 25D course in January so I know that is a good base knowledge for a Cyber MOS. That course is heavy into SANS certifications. There's class paths you can choose with their certifications here: https://www.sans.org/media/security-training/roadmap.pdf I encourage people to check that out. I hope to have my CEH cert before I attend 25D. It's good to have goals.

Don't let the ability to make rank faster affect your decision so much. Talk with NCOs within the 25 Series, 25B/D/N/S/U, and 17C for real experiences to compare against. The more, the better. You'll quickly realize Signaleers can hold the same MOS and have drastically different careers and experiences, especially us 25Us. On a personal note, though, you're on to a great start with the certs you have. I hope you have them documented on your records correctly.

I've talked with quite a few Bravos NCO, and the picture they paint isn't a pretty one. They're either getting out or attempting to re-class to 25D/17C or Warrant and some have been suggesting I do the same. Talking with a few Warrants (all 255Ns) two of them suggested going 17C and that they didn't see points dropping for Bravos anytime in the near future. I would love to make SGT as a Bravo and submit my packet for Warrant or even go 25D (both require NCOers) but the future on that in isn't looking so good.

I have all the certifications on my ERB and uploaded in iPERMS.

Seems 25B still have a hard time getting promoted to NCO ranks. Seems your best bet is to talk with more 25D/17C to get a headstart.

iPERMS saves records. But the certs should also go on the ERB/SRB and PPW.

You need to figure out what you want to do as a career. Find your passion and what you love and go for it. If you don't love what you do your going to have a long miserable career.

I'm pretty much in the field I want to be, heavier on the networking side though. Would love to get into network defense. It's just that if I really want to get to Warrant it even 25D, I'm going to have to make SGT and collect NCO experience. And the people I've talked to so far have said that they do not see points dropping for 25B. I don't quite know what all 17C does outside the general information but it's been suggested by a few of the warrants and bravos I've spoke to thus far as a military career saver for me, potentially.
