I am planning on going into the Army in the National guard then transferring to active duty at a later date to finish out my career, my only concern is this, since I was a child I have always wanted to be in the 82nd Airborne division, would it be possible to serve in the ANG and THEN once I transfer, get the 82nd in my Active duty contract?

Yes but then you also have a chance to win the lottery.

Is it really so unlikely that it is to be equated to winning the lottery?

You want the 82nd to be your first unit if you want to be in the 82nd get an airborne contact and you should end up in the 82nd they always need more new paratroopers.

It will be harder to transfer from the NG to active duty than it would be to just go active duty with an airborne contract. Do what you need to do but be forewarned.

I was speaking with an ANG recruiter and he said I could just take my contract and info to an active duty recruiter and I could transfer, will it be impossible?

It’s definitely not impossible, just more difficult than going straight to AD. I’ve met a lot of NG guys who say they wish they’d gone active. Of course it works the other way around as well. If the NG is willing to release you from their unit to go to AD you don’t have a bad chance, depending on MOS it will be easy but it’s not a guarantee unlike going straight to AD and signing for exactly what you want.

Max Mitchell - You don't want to do that there is a huge risk that you wont be released to go active duty.
