I am a prior service MP in the Army, I am currently in the Army NG as an MP but there is essentially zero room for promotion within my unit as we are the only MP unit in the state. I am working towards going active duty again but finding that almost near impossible of course with the draw down. I got in touch with an active duty Air Force Recruiter and they told me that the only positions they have available for prior service are in the Special Operations career fields. It would appear that the Prior Service Business Rules for the Army have not changed since May of 2015 and the only job that is closely related to being an MP is a 31E (Internment Specialist) or what we used to call Cage Kickers.
My question is, what is your opinion on accepting an MOS in hopes that the MOS you really want you can get later? Essentially, is it worth going in and retraining as a 31E in hopes that I can eventually get back to being a 31B just so that I can get back to active duty?
EDIT: Will I have to go back through Basic Training?

SPC Jessica Farringer CPT (Join to see) TSgt Hunter Logan My initial enlistment was as an MP were I reached the rank of SGT. I came down on orders for duty as a tower rat on the East German border. So I used my first reenlistment to reclassify into a different MOS.
I suggest you do your research to know all available options before you do anything.

Thank you Sir!

I think it would be hard pressed to get out of the 31E field if you get back in. Promotions in the 31E field I think are pretty good. Also could get out by going to CID. Kind of wish I would have done it sooner in my career so I would have gotten accepted. CW3 retirement isn't too bad.
