As the article states, this appears to have been a self-inflicted wound as recruitment/retention suffered in recent years (not entirely the USAF's fault).
How do you think this will effect you? Do you think the other branches will employ a similar strategy?

I recall when they did this after 9-11. So many people affected. The tentacles stretched long on that one. Folks that dropped papers for retirement/for separation/said-eff-it-not-reenlisting, were kept in and some were even deployed. Morale was LOW, to say the least.

I recall one female that went from AD to Contractor as well as an IMA Reservist. She got recalled after 9-11 from a very high-paying Contractor job to a SrA. In between shamelessly not doing her job, she squawked to everyone to get ok'd to "go home". She was already slated to deploy and did. She caused so much heartburn, when she asked to transfer billet to another Command closer to her HOR (and new fiancée), they allowed it. New Command told her she could release to IRR. Then the big hand of fate swooped in and had her deploy again since she was "critical AFSC and within her 1095". She did that, returned, dropped papers for IRR, and then Stop-loss hit. Man O' man, talk about Murphy's Law for this young lady. Talk about a bad taste for the AF blue as well as Charlie-Foxtrot.

This reminds me of the movie Stop Loss that came out about soldiers running away because they were stop-lossed. It was such BS and the more I watched it the more infuriated I got. It is not like they re-instituted the draft, right? And they only usually do that if there is a shortage of troops.

The post 9-11 Stop-Loss was a real killer for many folks I knew. The Guard/Reserve was hit very hard with this. Many good folks became very bitter and it really hurt unit moral.

Less than a year after we just had a huge RIF. Just goes to show that the AF still can't figure out how to manage personnel effectively.

In 1989, we called the RIF the Shoot The Wounded Program, they got rid of so many.

But since they asked for volunteers, pretty much everyone with outside career or school plans left. So those still in were either really dedicated or complete wastes of O2

I was a mustang major (14 yrs enlisted; 15 yrs officer) in 1992 when "Tony" McPeak decided to have prior enlisted service officer SERBs. I survived the first one. When a second one was announced, I decided to abandon my plan of staying around for my primary Lt Col board and retire at the 30 year mark on my schedule, not the Air Force's

Just the inevitable response to purging/culling the numbers in previous years. Numbers go through a perpetual up/down cycle.
