I was a 2w051 (ammo) in the Air Guard years ago. I have heard that I may need to repeat tech school if I want to come into an Air Guard ammo slot. Is that true? Is it the unit that decides, or is it Air Guard policy?

I forget the AFI off the top of my head but, yes, an AFSC “degrades” over time. After X amount of time a 5 level becomes a 3 level and eventually a 1 level.

Awesome, thanks. I should be thankful ... by comparison, the Army says I have to go to basic again!

That is a change, I did Navy 82 - 87. When into the Army Guard in 1997, I process through meps for my physical, but did not have to go to basic. In 1999, I switched over to the Air Guard, and still no basic again. The one thing that you want to remember is that your time in rate will start over. So, you will have to do your 2 years from you date of enlistment into the Guard. The unit training office will go over the training requirements for you AFSC and if you do not meet the current requirement in the training record, then you would have to go back to a 1 level and attend A school. Honestly, it will benefit both you and the command to have you go to 3 level school. No shame, when I went in 2000, there were several MSgt that were cross training and in my class.

SPC Steve Thomas I held a 3-Level before I was medically separated. I no longer hold said 3-level in my prior AFSC because it 'expires' after 2 years. It can be 'reactivated' w/ training & the proper level to sign off on that training.

I was told that, if I were interested in going back in to Security Forces, I would need to go back through Tech School since I've been out for so long. I'm kind of an old man to be playing such a young man's game - especially at the rank I'm coming back in at. So I'm opting for a new AFSC...lol

I had a 9 year break in service after I got off AD USAF. When I joined the army guard my air force AFSC (3E571) was used to grant me the Army 82C MOS. I didn't have to go back to basic or AIT.
