Without question disclosing my status cost me jobs. But I can't imagine the discussion I would have had with my boss on the eve of mobilization when I broke the news that I'll be gone for a year and you will hold my job for me. Better to be up front and work for people who value your military service,

This is a good point, sir, but I believe this would still make a difference as it, now, is not a requirement. Although, as you stated, disclosing the matter would still be in the SM's best interest.

I let my employer know up front that I was in the reserves, there was no issue with it.

While it may not be required, it can be advisable to do so just in case something happens. Employers tend not to like surprises.
