I stated this on another thread pertaining to this award that this ceremony is going to end Senior Chief's Navy career. I am not saying he should not receive the honor. What I think instead is that the medal should be presented in a private ceremony, then after Senior chooses to retire have a public ceremony. Once his face is plastered all over the media, he will be no good for JSOC missions.

Congratulations Senior Chief Byers.

Sgt Tom Cunnally - Sergeant; Receiving the Congressional Medal of Honor changes ANYONE's life. I've known people who received the CMoH and others who received the VC. Without exception they all thought that they were simply doing their job when they performed the actions that led to their receiving the awards. NONE of them thought that they "won" the award.

I agree that it will be "interesting" since some of the recipients of the CMoH responded positively and some responded negatively. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for "positively" here.

As far as refusing a decoration is concerned, the only award that is GUARANTEED to receive publicity is the CMoH (just TRY and keep the members of Congress quiet about it) so any other award can be handled bureaucratically and so quietly that there is no need to refuse it AND refusing the CMoH would generate even more publicity than accepting it.

The reason for the "secrecy" is that it improves the chances of success (and living through the operation). The reason that the "publicity seekers" get excluded is that publicity decreases the change of success (and living through the operation).

Although CPO Kyle's exploits have received a lot of publicity, his longest "official" shot is 'only' 2,100 yd while Corporal of Horse Harrison currently tops the field at 2,707 yd. CPO Kyle's 150 "officially confirmed" kills is pretty impressive, but it's a long way behind Simo Häyhä's 505 (and since that was during a war that lasted only 100 days it's even more impressive).

Now, having put the facts into perspective, do I think that SCPO Byers is likely to suffer the same fate as CPO Kyle did? I simply have no idea, but I suspect that the more "personal publicity" he attracts onto himself then the higher the likelihood that some wacko will try for his fifteen minutes of fame by killing him and thus "showing everyone" becomes.

COL Ted Mc - Thanx Col Btw did you know an Army Chaplain returned his Medal of Honor he received for his actions in Vietnam..?? I had a hard time understanding that and especially a Chaplain. I have a feeling that SCPO Byers will probably refuse all requests from the News Media for interviews and quietly slip back in the shadows..
I didn't know anyone who had a Medal of Honor but did serve with a few who had a Navy Cross,ie., our Corpsman and a Gunny

Sgt Tom Cunnally - Sergeant; Captain Liteky's CMoH was richly deserved and I have no doubt that other "Conscientious Objectors" have been awarded the CMoH under similar circumstances.

If Captain Liteky felt that he could no longer wear the medal in good conscience, then that was his decision to make.

COL Ted Mc - Ok Col ..I discussed Captain Liteky with recently retired Navy Chaplain Robert Keane SJ who is the Rector at BC and one of our members in the BC Veterans Network. I 'm the only former enlisted Marine in this group that has a few retired Colonels and one General. Chaplain Keane is seated to my right in this photo of a few of our network at BC. We try to get together a few times a year and I like interacting with the students and ROTC Cadets..And I was the only one in this group who ran in the 10k that AM at BC just before we had this photo taken so that might be why they have accepted me as one of them..???
