My Amtrak horror story.

One of the evolutions at the Basic School is the BASCOLEX. The Basic School Landing Exercise. We went up to Little Creek and boarded a gator freighter. For whatever reason, it didn’t leave the harbor. We left her in a column of 12-15 amtraks with 200+ 2nd lieutenants. Because I was prior service, I knew the best place to be was all the way forward on the port side. That is where the light and fresh air are.

Well, they couldn’t find the beach. It was February, it was very foggy. I don’t know what the sea state was, but it was Godawful. The nose of the Amtrak was burying itself in green water every 30 seconds or so and huge amounts of water were coming in the driver’s hatch and past my feet into the bilge. Up and down, up and down. And unlike back in the 8th Marines, these scurve ball lieutenants were passing helmets of, and bags of, vomit up to ME to be dumped over the side. I had a big F-U to that, but I heard some credible threats. Although I have a pretty good stomach and I had never got sick in an amtrak before, and never on a larger ship either, I was soon tossing my cookies and yearning for death like everyone else.

They finally found the beach. That was a long three hours.

We had a good platoon commander. I don't recall seeing him during this nightmare.

No way anyone on my crew would have let anything be passed up to be thrown over.

Nice to see the project go through. After completing countless illustrations for the MK154 tech manual, I began to have my doubts. I admit it was a fun project.
