Some good points; however, if I was trying to reach a wider audience, I'd drop the word *agency* and use a word (or words) that would be instantly understood by the average reader. I know the intended use of the word agency; however, short of looking it up, odds are many don't.

I'm not sure I agree with your observations of a diminishing sense of agency. But, as COL Vincent Stoneking pointed out in contrasting responsibility in terms of recognition and surrender, I do see your point on gratitude. Thanks for the share, I really like the way you phrased your questions towards this topic.

If there is anything I can offer it would be Dr. Nathan Cartagena's work on Aristotle and Ethics, where he tried to address fragmentation in the modern military and it's mindset. His paper came out around 2010, I think. It was an interesting read and spoke to agency and gratitude.

It's also worth noting that agency is "scary." If you're responsible for things..... You're RESPONSIBLE for things. It's much easier to say "well _____ said, so that's what it is, what you gonna do? Can't fight city hall...."

There's a fine line between "It is what it is" (recognition of reality) and "There's nothing I can do" (surrendering agency). People find it very easy to conflate the two. And society actively encourages this at the moment.

I know I confuse people on the daily by basically saying, yes, that's correct. That's 100% true and unchangeable, so this is what I'mma gonna do...

Yes. President Obama....one I rarely agree with....once said that we are not African Americans or Jewish Americans or Japanese Americans...."we are all Americans". This resonant message reflects what the Declaration of Independence made clear at the outset: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.". I don't see anything here that allows for differentiation or segregation based on some physical, spiritual or ethnic characteristic.
