Why would he? Anyone with half a brain would stay clear of this circus were dealing with between this and the last administration.

I have to disagree of the share of blame. There was plenty of time to make changes and start what was needed before the deadline. What was the DOD doing in all this time? What happened to contingency plans? No plan B or C? There was a failure in upper leadership in DOD and DA also!

Finally someone who criticizes all for their failures and gives praise for their accomplishments. Bush, Obama, Trump, and Biden all had their share of failures when it comes to Iraq/Afghanistan. Anyone who says such and such president did no wrong is just fooling themselves.

Well I disagree with Mr. Gates, Didn't think he did well under Obama when it came to Afghanistan, so would expect him to put the blame at the now president and last president.
I was never a big fan of Trump, didn't care for his personality, and many times what I considered a lack of tact. However just like many Officers and Senior NCO's I served under over my 20 years, who I could say the same thing about, what I could say about them and Trump was the got the Job done and it wasn't their job to make me like them.
Also Mr. Gates talks about the surge that was suppose to get rid of the Taliban and ISS, or take the teeth and sting out of them. Seems Mr. Gates and others have a short memory, Obama was forced to send in more troops and do the surge as the Taliban and ISS was gaining a lot of ground, World pressure and public opinion was very strong for the Obama administration to do something. Mr Gates said the surge was to cause combat operations to end by 2014. Trump didn't even take office until mid January 2017 3 years after the surge was suppose to end combat. In fact when Trump entered office it was his administration that put a huge surge on.
Bottom line Trump warn the Taliban about causing trouble when they started witdraw, there was never a set time in fact the withdraw had to deal with how the Taliban behaved.
Trump would have not closed down the Air Base, and Trump promised the Taliban that he would take the fight back to them if the caused trouble while troops were being withdrawn.
The only fault with Trump is I didn't think he thought he could lose the election, and would be able to work on the withdraw plan in more detail.
It's time for politics to get out of the military,

I just get tired of all the BS. The "He did, they did we did, The somebody else should be blamed and of course it all started before me so its their fault. Just send somebody to jail and get it over with.
