2 Questions, GEN.
1 - Did you ever ride a submarine? Just to see how other forces worked and how they could assist land based forces?

2 - What is the cat's name?

Good evening, Sir. I was wondering why is it that our 4-Star Commanders, both CNO/Chiefs of Staff and the Regional Combatant Commanders, are unwilling to step up and question unconstitutional orders in keeping with their oaths of office? One such instance is the unlawful action around Libya, where the action was not authorized by Congress. Obviously, it is inappropriate for the tactical commanders to refuse orders to participate when their fellow officers are committed, so they/we look to the guys with the big stars to go to bat for them. The Constitution and the War Powers Act are very clear: the Commander-in-Chief gets his authority to order the armed forces into harm's way when war is declared, the action is authorized by Congress, the United States has been attacked or there is a clear and present danger of its imminent attack. If there is a clear and present danger of the United States being attacked, the President has temporary authority to order the armed forces into harm's way for 90 days, during which he must get Congressional authorization or stand down.

GEN Stanley McChrystal,

Thanks for your exceptional service to our country. Since you have made the transition into civilian life, what are the best resources for a veteran to take advantage of during the transition phase back to civilian life? I'm currently working on a nonprofit which seeks to aid in the transition process so that vets aren't "rode hard and put up wet", which has been the SOP for generations. What are your thoughts on the transition process for the vets? Would it be possible for nonprofits to be introduced to the "soon to be" vets during their outprocessing?

Why does the DOD keep missing with the uniforms? Why can't they leave it alone? Instead of wasting money on that, put it in our pockets.

General, thank you for your service. My question as follows: Being a student of military history US Civil War plus and being a vet of two tours on the water in Nam it seems a lot of the complexity in our current conflicts stems not so much from the bad guys, we can always beat them, but by the micro management from DC. President Johnson did a "great job" of that in Nam down to picking daily targets. I feel there are too many lawyers involved in the war making process. Mistakes happen in combat as you know but we can not make the rules so complex that our forces are hindered in carry out the mission including force protection. You do not have to answer the following but I feel some of our military leaders tend to toe the line and not give the civilian leadership frank advice. I know of a few who have and where are they. It seems the halls of the Pentagon can be more lethal than a mine field. Looking forward to reading your book but have 32K words written on my quest to be a fairly good novelist. From the old salt "Well done sir and fair winds and a following seas".

Sir,

First, thank you for taking the time to jump in with an open forum.

Onto my question. I entered service as an enlisted man, and became an NCO before earning a direct commission. My leadership philosophy has changed dramatically from my days as an active member of the so-called "E-4 Mafia," to becoming a Squad Leader, and on to the present as a 1LT. Would you share how your leadership philosophy has or has not changed as you rose through the ranks and passed into the civilian sector?

Gen McChrystal, I was wondering your thoughts towards putting women into combat positions in our Armed Forces. I can think of no formidable force in the world that sends their women to the front lines to do the business of killing men. That is our primary goal as an Army and defense force is to fight and win wars. That is done by killing the men of those other countries. I do think it says something about a country that would send our women into harms way purposefully. I understand chance contact and women have performed admirably in those circumstances. However that is not the same as hunting men. I think we are going in the wrong direction when we expect our women to "ruck up and head to the mountains, jungle, forest, city...etc etc....to close with and destroy the enemy." All I have heard from top generals is the party line and it honestly sickens me to see top generals implementing this instead of standing their ground. All in the name of "fairness". War isn't fair, nor should it be. The military is not a social experiment and it shouldn't be used as one. As a fellow SOF soldier I wonder what your thoughts are on this matter. I know a rambled a bit there but this subject gets me all amped up. Thanks for your time and service sir.

Gen McCrystal,

It was an honor and privilege serving with you. I served as your VTC controller during my time in Balad, Iraq in 2007. It was fast paced and long hours but enjoyed every minute of it. I again, worked with you on the Joint Staff while your were Director. I was working in Chairman's Comm and stopped to say hello to you in the hallway. I served at Camp Integrity in 2013 with SOCOM for CJ6 and worked for MG Miller/CSM Stigall. I was impressed with their implementation of the organization/operations structure as it mirrored everything I experienced in Iraq. It seemed new and foreign to several folks and I was able to help explain the implementation and provide CJ6 with some change management. I would like to ask how that organization structure came to be? Was it born out of necessity or developed over time through trial and error? It seemed to me to be the most effective and efficient means to run operations as all key players were in the same room and utilizing VTC capabilities to communicate in real time and included everyone from planners to those conducting the operations.
