LTC Jason Mackay Colonel, this is one of the best articles that I have read in some time. Excellent work!

LTC Jason Mackay EXCELLENT! You might get a former Enlisted to write something similar. Also, in today's military the number of Enlisted with degrees and some with advanced degrees is growing. I also think it is important to state that not all people want to go from Enlisted to Officer.

Many enlisted technicians today are seeking degrees and continuing to get advanced technical skills so they can file senior middle managers told where leadership is lacking, especially in the civilian community. Your thoughts!

CPO Nate S. - not arguing that all enlisted with degrees pursue a commission. This was to answer the myriad of posts by Army Cadets seeking branch selection advice. Not everyone is cut out for or wants to pursue a commission, and that is OK.

CPO Nate S. - if you have problems tagging a certain person, you can copy their link, then delete down to just the 5-6 digit number in the middle of the link and that exact tag should pop up.

LTC Jason Mackay - Sir, Roger that. I agree, not all enlisted with a degree should or need to pursue a commission. Savvy technicians are also critical to unit success. Many of your same points about preferences are just as critical to enlisted personnel as they plan careers and in the end what they - really want. No worries, no worries!

This is awesome guidance. I liked the "Red Herring" topics -- so true! The "Cool Guy Schools" has so much sway over people, it's eye opening.

Sir, would it be alright if I turn this into a word .doc and distribute it through our ROTC Battalion here at Wheaton College?

For OTS, we were told, pick two and the third should be needs of the AF (which is the one you usually got)

Excellent article. This should be published in every ROTC BN website, FB, papers, everything. When I was an APMS, there were many "what if" questions that revolved around trying to game the system. Bottom line is: get as high on the OML as you can. In ROTC the big discriminator is GPA (or was when I was APMS). So make your selections and do your best.

I believe your bottomline is needs of the Army. My advice to cadets has always been separate what you want to do as a career in the military from your post military career goals. I mean for some of us like myself that chose combat arms that made up 4 of 5 top choices understood that it didn’t correlate to civilian occupation outside of mid level and senior leadership/management/operations type positions. Then again I was one of those cadets that planned to serve 20 plus years, retire, never work again.
The premise of the overall accessions OML is indeed what I was briefed at both Camp All-American and by my PMS.
I did see my degree play more of a role in my functional area assessment considering they offered me an FA that was not on my list but did match my degree.

The needs of the service always take priority over the desires of the applicant.

I'll set the challenge down right here. Plenty of opportunity for Command Post input.
- How to choose an Army branch?: OCS version
- How to choose an Army branch?: USMA version
- How do sister services assign officers career fields?

Widen the lense:
- How do I choose an Armed Forces Branch to pursue a commission? (hint: you may want to read the Carl Builder book "Masks of War" and the seminal "Armed Forces Officer" originally written by SLAM.
- Which commissioning source should I pursue (OCS, DC, ROTC, Service Academy)?
- Do you know your service academies? (West Point, Annapolis, USAFA, USCG Academy, Kings Point)
- Which opportunities are available by component? (Army ROTC and the options for Reserve, ARNG, and AD programs)
- When to fish or cut bait?: when to pursue a commission as an enlisted service member

Great article and recommendations. I would say the number one take away is to try to pick something you will enjoy and do well at. It doesn't matter if you do 8 years or 40 years, if you hate your job you will not be successful, and likely won't be successful in that field in the civilian sector afterwards either.
