Thank you for sharing your view. I'm not going to attempt to add. You said it perfectly Sir. God bless.

I already do this. I salute the flag even when it's on TV, like before a football game starts. My wife used to think it was kinda dumb, but now she thinks it's kinda cool. It's just who I've become since I separated from the military almost 30 years ago. I also go out of my way to thank other vets, current military, police, fire and EMS for their service. To me, it's only right.

I'm with ya General. As a retired federal law enforcement officer I am always 'under arms' but will render the hand salute when appropriate. Great idea !

"The National Defense Authorization Act of 2008 contained an amendment to allow un-uniformed service-members, military retirees, and veterans to render a hand salute during the hoisting, lowering, or passing of the U.S. flag. A later amendment further authorized hand-salutes during the national anthem by veterans."
I salute during the national anthem and any flag ceremony because the above says I can. I feel I have earned that right as a veteran.

Sir, I have pondered the same question as a civilian. I still am very much patriotic and still a US Marine in my mind and heart. I stand and start to salute Old Glory, but end up putting my right hand over my heart. During the Nationional Anthem, I just stand at attention. Frustrated inside, I still feel the urge to salute. I want to Maintain proper etiquette. Sir, I am going to follow the Major General's lead, and salute also. It may not be protocol in civilian attire, but it certainly is not disrespect, Sir. It may inspire others that are struggling with the same. Thanking The General for the article, Sir!

I salute Old Glory. It was my understanding that as veterans we are supposed to salute. My feeling, if you wish to salute, do so.
