From RP Staff:
*Senator Cruz will be joining us for a live Q&A on Friday, 2/26 at 1:00pm EST. Post your questions below in advance of the Q&A. Questions with the most up votes will be answered first. Please be upfront and to the point with your questions. RP Staff will be monitoring this discussion.*
From Senator Ted Cruz:
America now faces a momentous decision. Almost a decade of irresponsible defense cuts has slashed the number of combat personnel, seriously degraded their combat readiness, and shrunk the size of our military below any reasonable standard. If America continues to lead from behind, we will lose the ability to guarantee our safety at home and abroad.
Our all-volunteer force deserves better. They deserve a leader who will provide them with the finest weapons systems and the best training. They deserve the full and unapologetic support of their Commander-in-Chief, not a minimal commitment and overly restrictive Rules of Engagement.
Furthermore, Americans make up the finest military professionals and veterans in the world, and they deserve an investment in their careers, their health, and their families. We must honor of our military members, families, and veterans by ensuring they receive the respect and care they have earned.
Under focused, new leadership, America can, and will, rebuild our military and take care of our veterans.

Senator Cruz,
I am a left-of-center moderate. Tell me why anyone who is not an ultra-right religious conservative should consider voting for you.

Within hours of Justice Scalia's death, you took a very firm position that President Obama should not nominate a replacement for the Court. You believe the "American People should have a voice". You also have said you want someone on the Court who is an originalist as was Justice Scalia. My question, Senator, has several parts. Haven't the American people already voiced their opinion that President Obama is the person best qualified to nominate a Supreme Court Justice? After all, he is the duly elected President of the United States. Additionally, Justice Scalia, as an originalist, I believe would interpret the President's duty to nominate a Justice as enumerated in Article II, Section 2 of the Constitution to be inviolable. There is no mention of time limits or "lame duck" status. Is it not hypocritical to want an "originalist" Justice on the Court at the same time you want to disregard the Constitution when there is also precedence for this appointment?

But there is also nothing in the constitution that says the Senate HAS to approve the choice.

PO1 Kerry French - Agreed. But that is not my point. Sen. Cruz has stated he would do everything in his power to prevent a nominee from ever getting to a vote.

Any SM that is still in should not really get into this, could lead to possible trouble.

On the contrary, any SM who has a chance to ask a Presidential candidate a question in order to be better informed and better inform others in the military, but does not take advantage of that opportunity, is not really stepping up the way we want our service members to.

Would the Senator care to comment on the fact that he has consistently voted against funding for the VA while he is claiming to honor the military and veterans?

Why do you consistently vote against crucial Veterans benefits bills and then pander to veterans as if you support their rights to these benefits when in fact you don't.

I would like ask Senator Cruz: How does a broken immigration system effect the Latino community (Citizens, Legal Residents, Undocumented)? How does you (Esteemed Senator) plan to work towards reconciliation?

On October 12, 2016, you were quoted by the Washington Post as stating that the military shouldn't be used as a "cauldron for social experiments". Given your stance concerning gay marriage and LGBT rights, where do you stand with those who may potentially serve under a bigoted commander-in-chief and would you bring back "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"?

How come the Republican Party does not make a pointed effort to talk and visit in heavily populated, minority communities especially with everything that is going on, seemingly, against African Americans, Latino Americans, etc.?

The strengths of our military and modern armament and doctrine of war is second to none we have overkill technologies when deployed correctly and logistically be spend vastly and sometime waste fully to justify the "good of war". How come we don't do that in the same aspects when it comes to pay and VA benefits.. Keep in mind don't play the it's the democratic fault.. We are already getting 2 new submarines and new carriers under the current president so please not go there.. Pay and benefits .. Why don't we spend as much..?!?

There are serious medical issues for many veterans. What would you do to make the VA do more to address these issues. The VA did not recognize Parkinsons for Vietnam vets until 2010. Now many gulf war vets are developing early onset Parkinsons and the VA won't even do a study. There are many studies out there showing this link, yet they still deny it.
