In my early years, early 60's the Army did little or nothing to ENFORCE physical fitness standards. Tests and testing were waivered as normal course and the Army reflected those attitudes. I knew NCOs that couldn't button their Greens Blouse without puckers between each button. It was often embarrassing. The "Inclement Weather" version of the PT test was a farce as well. The Army today seems to be getting heavier AGAIN and that is unfortunate. 53 years after my initial enlistment and 20 years after my retirement I am STILL WATCHING. PS: I live in an Army Town near a significant AIT training facility. Be good at what you do AND STAY FIT for the Fight.

Great read, Colonel. I have been preforming and reviewing physical examinations for Army National Guard Officers and Enlisted personnel for several years and find myself (mentally) questioning how some individuals area able to pass the Physical Readiness Tests or are retained despite being outside of the morphological standards. (I smile at the term"corpulent" as used in the article - a little less personally demeaning than the proper designation as OBESE or MORBIDLY OBESE?)

I went to the Young Riders (Junior Olympics) in Three Day Eventing. Spending 15 years actively competing the original Horse Trials of the Calavry, I have great respect for training, preparations, coaching, teamwork, strategic planning and ultimately reach success goals on missions. I support this becoming part of real training. Anyone want the "story" of endurance cross country riding told with tales of military and indians, I am here!
