I belong to both and the IAVA also for good measure. Doing so is just an extension of serving. The challenge is to keep them relevant to the younger generation. IAVA seems to lead for that.

Joined the VFW, went to one in Alabama and Texas....both were sad. Old men drinking beer and complaining. Haven't been back since.

I have joined both organizations, but spend more of my time with the Legion. My reason for spending more time with the American legion is because of the work that is done for the community. As soon as I joined I got involved with Boys State here in Florida. This year I am a Vice Commander and will again be involved with Boys State. I am not involved with Girls State because we have an Auxiliary member that handles the young ladies. Our VFW's and Legions in the area have combined to have an Honor Guard that provides for Military Honors when a veteran passes on.

i joined the VFW and i gotta say , these monthly meetings that they have are creepy. Maybe its because im the youngest there. All other members are in their 50's , 60's and what not.

Keep trying to find your calling! I'm a member of VFW, and comfortably numb! They don't give you cold shoulder, you have to take the initiative that comes from the heart! Off topic, but there are thousands of backlogs at the VA from all branches, all wars, and when combat veterans feel a cold shoulder from our government, then some of these organizations will feel a cold shoulder from combat veteran, because he feels that he would still get screwed, This could be one of the many reasons they have not joined. How can you pay your dues, if your not getting compensated, and wife, mom or dad is picking up the tab?

Yeah, I didn't join until I retired. Life, especially one with children, keeps us busy

Seem they both like to drink a lot I'm not much into that and I like I think most of the new generation are have young families doesn't seem to be a lot of family type activities a bar is not a place I go with my wife maybe a resterant to have dinner nationally they seem to be on top of their game but locally they seem to be lacking for the new generation I do belong to project healing waters I can hang with other vets and fish no drinking and something to do at the same time seems more inviting and the wife is invited

I belong to both VFW and the American Legion, but unfortunately too many have too few available/willing active members to do much, so they end up being just another bar.
