CPT Jack Durish,

You made a interesting point about fraternal organizations. Older veterans are most likely to belong to these, while my generation and younger are not. I wonder if this contributes to the isolation that some veterans feel when they try out the American Legion and VFW. I want to go back after getting my MBA to help out, but I am not interested in any way shape or form in any type of fraternal organization.

Make a good point that social network has made it tougher for the groups to exist and i dont know about any one else's but my small town where i used to live the al and vfw has had a negative reputation about all that goes in there are vets and all they talk about is war and thats it but its really not like that at all

I am a member of the VFW only because my grandfather told me to join. So I went and I felt out of place. These guys were 2 my age and lived a different war. I enjoyed talking and respect them. But I also feel like I shouldn't have to pay to be a member. I did that when I spent 2 years of my life in Afghanistan. I'm glad theres people fighting for us but I wish there were more chapters with vets that served oif/oef. But maybe it's just my area like the military philosophy goes experiences may vary.

I also was Army and this town and most of the are where I live are Navy. I went to a couple of Stand downs and felt kind of out of place. I visited a VFW and American Legion and even though I'm older than dirt they were mainly much older or at least acted and appeared to be so I felt out of my element and didn't go back. My bad! I like the idea of joining just to support what they do for veterans. I might try that.

Join nearly 2 million former and current members of the US military, just like you.
