Disabled Veterans are not allowed to bring dependents on Space-A flights - this seems like a mistake or oversight in the McCain Defense Act. I have been trying to get it reviewed and changed for years but I can't seem to find anyone who cares to look at this one important line in the law. PLEASE - it would make a world of difference to be able to take my spouse and kids on the flights to see my aging father. There are heaps of open seats every day. Who needs their dependents to be with them more than a disabled veteran? It costs nothing. Please allow us to travel on Space-A with our dependents.

Hello Capt Suthard. Thank you for making this point. Several of our caregivers in the Red Cross Military and Veteran Caregiver Network have shared about this specific issue. I appreciate you trying to make a difference here.

Dear SPC Von, Thank you for your question and your service to our country. The Department of Veterans Affairs offers a number of benefits to eligible surviving spouses and children. For example, Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) is a tax-free monetary benefit paid to eligible survivors of service members and veterans whose death resulted from a service related injury or illness. The Survivor Pension is a tax-free monetary benefit payable to a low-income, un-remarried spouse and.or unmarried dependent child of a deceased veteran with wartime service. TAPS Casework provides support in navigating survivor benefits, as well as partnerships with organizations like the Department of Veterans Affairs. Should anyone grieving a military death have questions, please encourage them to contact TAPS 24/7 at 800.959.TAPS (8277) or e-mail [login to see] . We are here to help. Sending you hope and gratitude, Bonnie Carroll https://www.taps.org/

Good afternoon, and thank you for your question! Unfortunately, upon your passing your VA disability benefits will end. However, VA does offer a variety of benefits for surviving spouses that your spouse may qualify for. Please feel free to reach out to us at [login to see] and we will gladly go into further details!

What happened to TriWest Choice? No providers seem to know. I have no idea how to get the care I once received through TriWest Choice and I am in a lot of pain.

CAN A RETIRED SVC MEMBER USE A MILITARY BENEFIT TO TAKE FAA FLYING CERTIFICATION EXAMS AT NO COST AT SELECTED USA MILITARY ESTABLISHMENTS?
PO3 Alvin DeWalt
Why are disabled vets being denied exchange and commissary privileges in Japan? US Forces Japan claims it violates SOFA agreements, however, under SOFA military retirees have access. The Purple Heart and Disabled Veterans Equal Access Act, states; “(d) Eligibility Of Veterans With Service-Connected Disabilities.—A veteran with a service-connected disability shall be permitted to use commissary stores and MWR facilities on the same basis as a member of the armed forces entitled to retired or retainer pay." The language of the law specifically gives service connected vets the same status as a military retirees, but US Forces Japan is ignoring the law. What about "on the same basis" do they not understand? Please help.

LtCol Brad Lanto,
How is a veteran suppose to get timely help with PTSD? I told my VA medical provider at a local VA Clinic on July 1, I was having terrible dreams and flash backs from events during my active duty time and they were very hard to live with. He agreed to have me see their mental health professional at the earliest available time, but that was not until July 29th. I asked scheduling if there is anyway to see someone sooner, but they said there was no way to get one sooner. How is the VA going to deal with PTSD and suicides in their veterans if they take a month to get mental health help for veterans. If I were a veteran that was counting on the VA for help and was on the verge of suicide, you would have had one more veteran suicide statistic. What is the VA going to do to streamline mental health scheduling so veterans seeking help don’t have to wait a month to get help?

The fact you got in in less than a month I think is actually pretty decent, I have waited a couple months, especially around the holidays when social workers are checking on everyone so fewer appointments are available. Most of my care has been on video at the clinic (main is Hines but I don't like to drive into Chicago). I asked why we couldn't just do a skype or facebook messenger type app for care from home instead of me driving 40 miles to the closest CBOC in Kankakee, Illinois and was told it was due to HIPAA rules. But, then why are their companies now selling services online to talk to counselors thru online video services? Wonder if the VA would pay for us to just call into the online video services instead of driving an hour each way for the same service?

James, good point, while 1 month is much better than 2 - my point was that if the VA is serious about getting 20 suicides/day down to 0; timing of care will be critical to achieving it. As you well pointed out, veterans do not all live near metro areas and they need to look at how to provide care to you, either remotely at home or with community care in your town.
