Matt, That is a great question and we hear it a lot. First, I would invite you to check out our website http://www.militarychild.org/webinars where you will find a list of webinars on the topic of college applications and financial aid as well as a host of other topics that you may find valuable. I've done some research and there are a lot of options available to applicants of veterans and current military-connected families.

You may have heard of the Federal Pell Grant (https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/types/grants-scholarships/pell ) and perhaps the Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant Program - The FSEOG Program provides need-based grants for low-income undergraduate students. Pell Grant recipients get priority for FSEOG.
(https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/types/grants-scholarships/fseog). Following is a list we've compiled of some military-specific college scholarships: Air Force: General Henry H. Arnold Education Grant Program: The Air Force Society awards scholarship money to college students under the age of 24, if their parents are eligible. Awarded students receive grants ranging from $500-$2,000.
https://www.afas.org/general-henry-h-arnold-education-grant/

Army: Army Scholarship Foundation: Students enrolled in college or technical education programs may be eligible for $500-$2,000 scholarships. Scholarship recipients must have at least a 2.0 GPA, be younger than 24, and fill out the FAFSA, among other requirements.
http://www.armyscholarshipfoundation.org/

Marine Corps: Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation: If one of your parents served in the corps and you're a first-time college or career tech student, you may be eligible for one of these scholarships. For the 2012-2013 school year, the foundation awarded more than $6 million to eligible students.
https://www.mcsf.org/

Navy: Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society: The Vice Admiral E.P. Travers Scholarship and Loan Program provides financial aid to children and spouses of active duty and retired sailors and Marines. This joint program offers a variety of funding opportunities, including the NMCRS Gold Star Scholarship, offered to children of fallen sailors or Marines.

Find more ways to finance your child's education on the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society Education Assistance page. Interest free loans and grants range from $500 to $3,000 per academic year.
http://www.nmcrs.org/

http://www.nmcrs.org/pages/education-loans-and-scholarshipsFisher House Foundation
Navy League of the United States Scholarship Program: These scholarships are open to children of Navy members, as well as kids of Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Merchant Marine, and Naval Sea Cadet Corps members. Students must have at least a 3.0 GPA.

Other military scholarships

AMVETS National Scholarship Program: AMVETS offers a variety of scholarships, ranging from $1,000-$4,000. Children and grandchildren of veterans, as well as vets themselves, are eligible.
http://amvets.org/scholarships/

Children of Warriors National: Presidents' Scholarship: Children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren of service members are eligible for these scholarships offered through the American Legion Auxiliary. Awards range from $2,500 to $3,500.

Army Emergency Relief - The MG James Ursano Scholarship Fund offers scholarships for children of active-duty soldiers, retirees or those who died in service. These scholarships can be used for undergraduate studies or vocational training, or they can be used to help a student prepare to enter a military academy.
https://www.aerhq.org/Apply-for-Scholarship

Reserve Officer Training Corps Scholarships - Scholarships are awarded based on merit and grades, not financial need. Contact any of the following for help figuring out if you're eligible: Army ROTC, 800-USA-ROTC; Marine Corps ROTC, 800-MARINES; Navy ROTC, 800-USA-NAVY; Air Force ROTC, [login to see] .

American Legion Legacy Scholarship - This scholarship helps anyone whose parent was a service member who died while on active duty since Sept. 11, 2001. If that's you, read about the scholarship.

ThanksUSA Scholarship Program - ThanksUSA has awarded more than 3,400 scholarships totaling more than $10 million since 2006. If your spouse or parents are in the military, this is definitely a scholarship worth applying for.

Fisher House Foundation: This site has added a customized search tool for finding funding for your educational goals.

-Scholarships for Military Children - A total of 700 scholarship grants, each for $2,000, will be awarded for school year 2017-18. There will be at least one recipient selected at every commissary location where qualified applications are received.

The "Heroes' Legacy Scholarships" program honors not only those who have fallen in battle, but all who have died or have become disabled through their active military service since September 11, 2001. The program is open to their dependent unmarried children under age 23.

Hey Matt. I lead a nonprofit called Code of Support and we created a free database called PATRIOTlink, with vetted and curated resources - including scholarships. I just did a key word search "college scholarships" and just under 100 programs pulled up. You can narrow the search based on who your searching for (i.e. veteran, child, etc.), location, branch of service, disability and other factors that determine eligibility. http://www.patriotlink.org. Just create an account and start searching. Let me know how it goes [login to see]

Hi. SGT. I lead a nonprofit called Code of Support. We have a team of Veteran and Caregiver Peer navigators who can assess your need (it sounds like you have a computer, but need better internet connection?), eligibility criteria (be it for the VA, other government programs or community based nonprofits), and potentially get you what you need. Just submit an application for assistance and we'll get back with you asap. https://www.codeofsupport.org/get-help.

Hi Jim and thank you for your question. Extending your delimiting date for education benefits is very narrow. If you had a medical condition that prevented you from attending school and you have it documented (medical records), you can submit a request to extend your date by the amount of time you missed. Please contact the Education Call Center at [login to see] to talk with an agent to learn more. Thank you for your Service.

Thank you, it does seem though that with all of the closings and delays, various other confusions, that there could be some accommodation for extensions especially since post 9/11 for those after 2013 is indefinite? I do very much appreciate this forum, I was trying to find a way to address and hopefully a way to extend.

Yes the state/territory aging and disability resource center/No Wrong Door System (ADRC/NWD System) can assist Veterans in getting connected to nutrition programs and homemaker support. To find your state ADRC/NWD System go to https://acl.gov/sites/default/files/programs/2020-07/NWD_System_Contacts_7.13.20.pdf The Eldercare Locator (https://eldercare.acl.gov/Public/Index.aspx ) also provides information regarding organizations that connect individuals to homemaker and meal services in their communities.

Bobby …thank you for your service to our country and for looking out for your friends. Caregiving comes in all shapes and sizes but most importantly includes helping each other out – and you’re clearly doing that. Thank you. Thank you to both you and your dad for your service. He must love that you share that, and we can only imagine how grateful he is to you for your help. We are too. As a caregiver for your dad, there are Veteran resources that may be helpful and cover a broad range of services and support – from the VA Quick Start Guide, to VA Caregiver Support and VA Caregiver Support Coordinators. You can find these resource on our ARCHANGELS COVID Resources For Veterans section. - https://we-are-archangels.squarespace.com/covid-19-resources/#veteran

Thank you and BIG LOVE to the VA and RallyPoint for allowing ARCHANGELS to be part of this. We are deeply grateful for all you do for our country EVERY day… and today is just another great example. While this live chat will end, our appreciation for veterans and all they are doing will not, and we will be looking to help over time through our resources on our website at https://www.archangels.me/covid-19-resources . We would also love to hear your stories of care – and you can share them on our website https://www.archangels.me/your-stories … you never know how many people you can help when you share what’s going on with you… at the least by helping them feel less alone in whatever they may be going through, but also because caregivers know better than anyone else what works and what doesn’t – so hearing a fellow vet’s caregiver story is a great resource. Ask your friends to share their stories too – or just read the ones others have shared. Our only goal is to provide relevant and meaningful caregiver and COVID specific caregiver resources to our veteran and civilian communities – please visit us at ARCHANGELS.ME. Thank you again – and #LookLoveLift
• We only share what you allow us to share and all stories are strictly confidential.

The Veteran Direct Care program, implemented in 2009, is for Vets of all ages that are at risk of nursing home placement. Alot of VA's do not know about this program, such as the Atlanta VA and some of the VA's refuse the program, such as the Montgomery VA. This program will save the VA money and help veterans in need. My father needs this program, especially during this covid time yet noone will help get this program implemented in the Alabama CAVHS. How can we get help with this and why is this program not mandatory? Why does the Montgomery Chief social worker keep rejecting the program when this program should be going to the Director? Montgomery was supposed to be one of the 1st pilot programs. The Alabama Aging Consortium is certified to administer the program, yet it is 2020 and the Montgomery VA still refuses it.

Ms. Hatcher, thank you for this question. The Veteran Directed Care (VDC) program is available at 68 VA medical centers. The program is operated by local or State Aging and Disability Agencies under agreements with VA. VDC and all home and community based services are expected to expand as a result of the recently approved Strategic Plan for Geriatrics and Extended Care services. While VDC may not be available in your area at this time, all VAMCs support Veterans and their caregivers through agency services for home health aides, adult day health care and respite care. We recommend contacting the local VAMC Geriatrics or Social Work Service office for more information.

When is the VA going to finally bend over and yell “pop” and get the IT issues resolved for caregivers for pre 9/11 veterans? I and many other veterans are tired of hearing “soon” “be patient” and what other BS VA ones up with. VA has a data base that already services millions of veterans including thousands of disabled veterans. Why can’t he same database be used for the caregiver program? Or is this just the real VA showing it’s colors of delay, deny, until the veteran dies?

SPC Middleton, We are planning on launching the MISSION ACT changes in Fall 2020. As part of this launch we will have an updated IT System to support this effort and provide data and information specific to the caregivers and veterans we serve. This updated IT system is required by law and we agree that a system directed especially for this program will prove to be very valuable.
