Dear Michelle, thank you for your wonderful question. VA has a variety of open doors for survivors to obtain information about the various benefits available, but a great place to start would be with my office, the Office of Survivors Assistance. If you or any of your friends have questions about VA benefits we would be happy to do our best to assist. Simply send us a note at [login to see] or call us at [login to see] . Finally, I see that Bonnie Carroll also responded above - and it would be impossible to overstate wonderful work that TAPS does for our survivors! All the best-

I lost my medical records from my time in active service. I have tried to get them and can not. It feels like I just get the run around. Any help please and thank you. [login to see]

Also, as a surviving spouse I am receiving Spousal Pension monthly. I am not eligible for Champus, unfortunately, but have been advised that I am eligible to be reimbursed for my out of pocket medical expenses. I submitted my expenses for reimbursement but only received a deposit for 5% or less of what I submitted. Can someone please clarify?

Good afternoon, Crystal-
VA's survivor pension allows people to lower their countable income by writing off out of pocket medical expenses which in turn could increase your monthly benefit. However, by virtue of how the law is written, you may only write off expenses that exceed 5% of your Maximum Annual Pension Rate (MAPR). If you would like further details, feel free to reach out to our office at [login to see]

Good afternoon, Crystal! ID cards and access privileges are controlled by the Department of Defense. Simply reach out to the ID Card Office at your local installation and they will advise you about your privileges. If you happen to need any documentation from VA, feel free to reach out to our office and we will do our best to get you squared away. We may be reached at [login to see]

I was wondering if there is any free legal advice for my fiancé going through a child custody battle, though we are not married. Starting a new family in a time like these is tough and any legal help that we can benefit from would be helpful. Thank you

Most states have probono legal aid programs and many do family law. Check with your local 211 to find one in your area.

My question is. I have 80% disability. I have 2 boys 10 &12 years old. Their mother is Canadian and will not allow them to leave Canada. Is there any medical or educational assistance that I can get for them in Canada. The youngest has Aspergers.

Dear MSgt Boe, thank you for your question and for both you and your wife's service. Once you are registered in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System, you should be issued a uniformed service identification (ID) card. You can access the ID Card Office Locator online at https://idco.dmdc.osd.mil/idco/#/. With gratitude, Bonnie Carroll
