Companies who hire Veterans and spouses during these challenging times will benefit from those employees’ maturity, leadership and resilience gained during their military service. I applaud your efforts to strengthen our economy by leveraging this exceptional talent pool within our Veteran community. What leadership development programs do you provide to employees who join as individual contributors to help them grow into leadership roles?

The Walgreens HERO Program is an exciting opportunity for our veterans to bring their expertise and leadership skills into a transitional career such as retail management. Through this initiative, Walgreens has a vision to hire 5,000 veterans over the course of five years into entry-level management roles, such as shift lead (SFL). While enhancing leadership skills in a business setting. HERO Program participants will also have the opportunity to work towards their bachelor's degree with tuition assistance and discounts available.

Working for a State Agency in California as a LVER, Local Veterans Employment Representative, and am wondering: how many of the companies on the discussion have Military Translators on their hiring pages so that a Veteran can easily look into certain positions within a company based upon their MOS? I know so do, but not all...if I am correct?

ALSO, I get emails from certain companies/Recruiters from certain companies (on this discussion board) stating that we can email them back with potential applicants, but when this happens, it takes a very long time to get some type of response. Is there some way we can get not only the Recruiter info for our area (Region/State), but also a local contact who knows what the Recruiter is doing (putting out there that there are positions within the company, within our local communities -- there seems to be a disconnect between the Recruiter and the local POC for said company. The local POC tells us THEY ARE NOT HIRING, even after showing them the emails/fliers the Recruiters are publishing. This really disheartens Veteran job seekers and really puts a stain on the company...especially when companies tout that they are a "Veteran-friendly" company. I know there are other ways the employer can tout they are Veteran-friendly, but this initial experience ruins things.

Secretary McDonald thank you for asking this important question. Amazon has leadership development programs to develop high potential transitioning military and graduates with MBA or Masters level education in engineering, supply chain, logistics, or similar disciplines into Amazon's next General Managers (GMs), Directors, and Vice Presidents (VPs). Also, we have numerous mentorship programs for veteran employees at Amazon and we also provide mentorship to veterans and spouses interested in Amazon through partnerships with ACP, etc. In doing this we ensure the veteran joins the company in the role and grade that is the best fit for their career goals and experience.

Thank you for your focus on hiring members of our military and Veteran community during this stressful time in our nation. Because this period of high unemployment is frightening and destabilizing for so many Americans, more than ever before, we must be proactive and reach out to provide care and support for each other. The PREVENTS Task Force Office applauds your efforts. What do you see as best practices for supporting the mental health and wellbeing of your employees as we face the challenges associated with the COVID 19 pandemic, the current economic downturn, and the necessary but painful civil unrest occurring within our communities?

Amazon has launched numerous initiatives during COVID-19 to support employee mental health as well as that of veterans and communities at large. We have recently launched Amazon Care (https://amazon.care/) to make healthcare mobile accessible for employees . This also allows employees to be tested for COVID-19 for free and speak to healthcare providers on demand. Alexa devices have also been donated to allow people to participate in telehealth sessions from home and in hospitals, and also provides tips during COVID-19. We also offer free benefits for therapy, behavioral health, and meditation for employees too.

SFC (Join to see) - feelings, You have been spending to much time around your mommy. Daddy told me if you have feelings as a man then some one can hurt those feelings. You are better off not having them. A man in a mans world is a tough place, Feelings will only drag you down. Focus on logic and do your job better than every one. Then one day they will call you a God of logic/your job.

CMSgt Chase Conway - Of course I am not a CMSgt, The only reason for the rank thing is to make you feel small next to the high ranking people here. My Father cheated his whole life to get to the very top of the world, And told me to always follow the rules, and I did. And I got noware.
The high ranking people here are people that think rules are for stupid people.
Just ask them they will tell you. If I feel like a CMSgt Than why not call me one.
I am of course smarter than all of you put together. Just ask me I will tell you.
When the shit hit the fan at my company They always came crawling to my lab to bail them out. And I did all the time

With so many members of our National Guard being activated for both OCONUS deployments and domestic response, how do you take care of your employees who serve in our Guard and Reserve units? What other things can we do to incentivize hiring veterans, and those active in our reserve components?

I have a colleague at Amazon who is activated with the National Guard currently and I'm in the Reserves myself. Amazon has an Employee Assistance Program that supports Reserve and Guard employees, and also provides military Leaves of Absence (LOA).

Wow - this is such a great group to take time to answer our Veteran and spouse employment questions. Thank you for joining us and for hiring so many vets! To our hiring partners at Amazon, USAA, VHA, Walmart, and Walgreens, what are some of the most common roles in which Veterans both excel as teammates within your organizations and for which you are also hiring new talent today? To our partners at Blue Star Families, VESO, and ACP, what is your top piece of advice for Veteran and spouse job-seekers that will help improve their chances of success during this period of historically high unemployment?

The key to success is networking and finding people within the organization that are in the same job field in which you want to apply. Leverage platforms such as LinkedIn to have informational interviews and learn about the company and its opportunities.

My comment is simple. Learning how to write a competitive federal resume is key. In the federal government, your resume is your application. The applicant must sell themselves on paper. They must know what the resume must be written relevant to the position. A general resume will not make the cut. What is the best approach to reach out to employers before or after applying for the position? What do employers want to hear in a personal LinkedIn message or e-mail? How do you standout without being too aggressive?

HI Tim - thank you for your service and for your question. ACP always recommends that our veteran Proteges follow-up with interviewers shortly after their conversation to say thank you and reiterate interest in the position. We have found that referring back to specific points of conversation from the interview can be helpful. Additionally, we always recommend follow-up after a week if you have not heard back from the interviewer. We recommend reiterating your interest in the position and sharing either an article that relates to the company/your discussion or a follow-up thought based on the interview

Why when it comes to hiring the Veteran do we have to jump through so many hoops? We fill out USA jobs apps and then present so much paperwork and then when we are selected we have to go through so much verification through several data agencies proof from several civilian agencies plus criminal agency and fingerprinting. I have had a terrible experience applying in the VA system for a healthcare position and Military experience doesn't count for anything. Why does applying for a federal job require documentation of state licenses? The whole process has taken months with all its redundancy and meaningless paperwork and almost want to not even bother. Then there is the civilian worker stigma of I am only here 8 hrs and I will just do the minimum required before breaks and meals and go home. No phone calls back or no information from all government agencies in any kind if a timely manner.

Sincerely A Frustrated Soldier,
.

I am a disabled veteran. I recently earned a masters degree in facilities management, a bachelors in business management. I am a licensed electrician in Massachusetts. I am 57 years old and applied to countless job postings private and government. I have yet to receive a job offer. My resume is finely tuned. I continue to be rejected. I am frustrated and disappointed that all my hard work has yet to pay off. What must I do?
