Hello, Despite a supposed disabled veteran preference, I've been turned down over several years for a VA nurse positions. I'm a 19 year RN in good standing with 3 state licenses. For me, the VA hiring process has been, overall, demoralizing. My fellow nurse colleagues, including VA nurses and physicians, have said many times, you should be working here! I've even had a couple VA HR reps say "you've been presented and recommended for the job, but it's up to the managers to hire." Well, maybe VA management is a little too comfortable, because I've done everything I can, given my situation, to be a VA nurse. That's been my goal for over a decade. Now, as I face extended unemployment, perhaps it's just an elusive dream. I don't think I'm asking for much. Just a chance to be a VA nurse, and work as long as I can to maintain my independence and care for my fellow veterans. Also, a chance to not rely so much on VA monetary support. Anyone know of some non-routine avenues I can try, given my situation?

Timothy Johnston - Thank you, Timothy! That's good advice, as it's an avenue I haven't tried. I'd hoped a local, internal advocate could make headway with assisting me, but it's been tough. I appreciate your reply and I'm copying the info.

SMSgt Julieann Torres - Thank you, Julieann, I'm assuming you're trying to be helpful, but the copy/paste reply isn't. I'm fully aware there's no job guarantee, and of course I'm well-versed in the routine application process. However, based on your reply, I edited my question above to be more specific and less "why me" if that helps me garner more helpful feedback.

I can sense your frustration but applying for VA jobs can be very competitive, even for disabled Vets.

I don't know if that's true since I have applied multiple times with Amazon and Walmart as a loss prevention Specialist. After Separation from Army in 2012 , I have been working as a security shift supervisor and Loss prevention and after all that high professional experience still unsuccessful and yet their baseless claim of hiring veterans.

Do all of these companies intend to keep the tradition alive of viewing veterans as cheap labor and offering the bare minimum level of pay and opp5?

I get it, your probably on their board of directors and get a fat check. I would use PR copy and paste if I was as fortunate as you but I'm not. Me and my wife are researching our legal options because of what USAA did to us.

MSG Darren Sherrard - When you say a recruiter? Is this through USA jobs or is the VA direct hiring? I wouldnt mind working for the VA after all I am heavily involved with them in Honolulu to return to work.

You know I served this country for 27 years as a combat soldier fighting terrorism around the world. And I can't get a job at the va Hospital here in Milwaukee Wisconsin I feel like I gave but got nothing in return for my giving I have 5 kids I've missed so many proms, pta meeting basketball games graduations babies being born. Because I was somewhere fighting terrorism. I can't get any of those things back they're gone and never coming back. Then I have to tell them I was serving my country all 5 of my children said to me dad but your country not serving you so they feel very cheated because they are right (SAD)
