The VA DOES do drug testing. While I was using DFW facilities, the worst of the worst from what I've experienced from VA facilities, they tested me every time I came in. And the Ft Worth ops administrator lied to a Congressional inquiry, something I should have pursued but just got tired of fighting.
And the VA formulary is at LEAST a decade behind the times. The VA and I have talked about this before so I know it isn't going to change.

Yes, when you have a blood panel they will see if you are a drug abuser whether you are with the VA or not.

VA needs to end and be replaced with VA Medicare Cards so we can get our own healthcare that's better quality and more accountable.

"I make too much money", or "I have too many assets." If those are fake someone needs to tell the people who denied me enrollment for a couple of decades.

That one's an easily-dispelled myth, but I've heard that, too: A LOT of people who work at VA have never set foot in a MEPS or taken a single step in a uniform.

In my case the fact was "Unless we treat you totally, we don't want to treat you at all." I then used VA for many years. But I stopped using VA when when I retired from my civilian job and the distance became too great.

I am a little over 70%. i Have never had a problem with the VA. and my benefits except when i first enlisted in the Military that i would get medical, optical, and dental, for life i took a break in service and when i reenlisted i had lost optical, and dental, for life Congress voted it out.
Now i have seen most of the complaints here and i agree with some many i am amazed at.
While i was in it was common knowledge That when you left the Service the first place you go is the VA so they could do a Full check and complete check up and a copy of your Military Medical records. This stopped the horror of things like what i see posted here.
Yes they would check you military Medical records and see if you had seen medical people in the Military for what you were claiming now.
I understand this part because even the Guards, and reservist, Contractors Use the VA.
Now your claim for Head injury is denied because you never were seen medically while in service. Then after you left the service the Car accident you had a month ago says that the Car insurance took care of the head injury.
Many things are denied simply because the claim is not accurate. JMT

I've heard all of these, and it's been my experience that none of them are accurate. I didn't start getting seen at our local VA facilities until 2019, even though I left the Air Force in 1977. Why I took so long, who knows? Life got in the way. It took an ophthalmologist to screw up one of my eyes, through private health care, and the fact that I needed hearing aids. I have the VA to thank for saving that eye, and I have hearing aids that I didn't have to pay a dime for. My husband and I are both veterans, and we have had nothing but good care from the VA. We are almost at the point of ditching the private health care in favor of being seen exclusively at the VA. The only problem with that is that if we go on vacation where there isn't any VA facilities, it might be hard to get healthcare if needed. We support the VA wholeheartedly!
