"I can only get treatment for injuries that I received while in the service."

"The VA is antiquated, only has doctors that can't make it as civilians, and is made up of bureaucrats that are more interested in getting a paycheck for doing nothing."

"I can't apply for benefits because I should have done that 20 years ago."

Adding the following a few months later because of the misunderstanding that seems to be common about eligibility for VA healthcare: "I am only eligible for VA healthcare if I have a disability rating from the VA."

CPO James Barnhart - You might be in a category that should have been granted a service connection based on your occupation. I don't speak 'squid' fluently, but if you're a 'series 42' Machinist Mate, then you should have been granted an assumption that you had hazardous noise exposure (HNE).

For hearing loss, if you don't have a documented event, injury, disease related to an audiological disability while you were in the military, the VA will concede that you had HNE during your time in the service if -
• You were engaged in combat with the enemy in active service during a period of war, campaign, or expedition; or
• Your duty MOS is listed on the Duty Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) Noise Exposure Listing as having at least a low probability of HNE.

According to the March 2022 listing*, a series 42 Machinist Mate has a high probability of HNE.

If you are in this category, then you should work with a VSO to resubmit/appeal the claim. Depending on how long ago you did the claim, you might be able to submit a Clear and Unmistakable Error (CUE) request*

CPO James Barnhart - I’m sorry to hear that.
I know that it’s difficult to get a hearing loss rating. My personal experience is that I was denied hearing loss, but instead, they rated me at 10% for tlnitus with no compensation. This took roughly 5 years after my discharge.
Aside from that I received great help from the VFW in securing higher ratings from injuries and illnesses that resulted from different deployments.
I wish you the best of luck and hope that you receive the compensation that you deserve.

CPO James Barnhart - My experience is that the rating system doesn't always make logical sense. I was denied a service connected rating for something that my doctors say is a direct result of a condition I already have a rating for. On reapplying, I was still denied the rating on the basis of it's being a result of the one condition, but given a rating for it anyway based on another reason aloghether that I didn't even suggest. Bottom line is that it helps to go through a VSO who has a good grasp on how the system works.

I got out in 1985 after 13 years, but I did not apply for VA disability until 2019 and got evaluated in January 2020 for my hearing loss and received a 100% hearing loss disability withing 60 days. Realize my hearing was only 8% in one ear which is why but I had been buying my own hearing aids since 1985 when I got out and it wasn't cheap. The strongest hearing aids were not enough. VA has now paid for me to get cochlear implants. I feel 100% disabled and I have no social life because I can't hear well enough to socialize. I still feel fortunate to have received my disability rating.

Appeal appeal. I had been out of the service for 40 years about and went for my first try at the Va. I had ben getting 20% since discharge in 1969, but I never went to theVA until around 2005. I was immediately set up with an appointment and was given 70% for PTSD right away. Later several years I went back for tinnitus, and I had worked underground doing testing in Mines all over the US and Canada for many years. I was told that that type of employment would naturally create hearing and tinnitus problems. I told them I worked under the Federal MSHA which dictated we wear safety and hearing equipment . I was granted tinnitus. I never applied for hearing loss as it wasn't long before the VA found many other problems related to my service in
Vietnam. I am 100% Total and Permanent disabled. I get the best treatment I have ever had from the VA. Civillian treatment takes for ever and a lot of paperwork to Gert paid by A.,. I strongly suggest all prior Service people immediately after discharge to the VA and register with them.

Gun Rights for 'Mentally Incompetent' veterans is an ongoing and current debate. Meanwhile in Atlanta, where Incompetence knows no bounds, you can be "flagged as disruptive" for voicing anger about 'their ongoing negligence'. Call me crazy but being deemed 'mentally incompetent' by 'THE INCOMPETENT' would be insane, so I'm going off the rails on this crazy train. Just saying, it's a slippery slope...

Not true at all. I have been with the VA since I left the Army in 1992. I have received fantastic care. The few times that I have been sent out into the community, the medical people did not listen to me, did not treat me with respect, and told me everything was in my head. I am a 60% service-connected Veteran. It used to be the way many of you are saying but that has drastically changed. Please, go check the VA out again.

I get the BEST CARE from VA that I could ask for. After my 2nd heart attack, there was a delay in getting me to a cardiologist so I asked for Community Care where they send me to a civilian doctor. That doctor browsed my chart for the first time when I arrived for my appointment, then said, "You're OK, come back in a year." I didn't feel OK so I asked to keep the later appointment with the VA cardiologist. He was phenomenal! Young, knowledgeable, and willing to do whatever tests would satisfy me that I would be OK. He took the time to explain what was done during my surgery, what I could expect in the future, what each medication was and what each test was.

Some of VA hospitals are worse than others. The one in my area that I read bad items about is in Memphis. I will choose Nashville, Marion IL, or Poplar Bluff MO before going to Memphis.

I left the Army July 31, 1992 and around about Aug 15, 1992, I received mail telling me to report to my local VA and get evaluated for care. For those still on active duty and getting ready to leave, make sure in your medical records are up to date. There is a form that is filled or was filled out as of 1992, listing all your medical problems and it is sent to the VA during out processing.

Ya know, I think you may have a valid point! I’ve been awaiting what the contract health contractor outfit has submitted for agent orange poisoning, (in their words) “a slam dunk due to existing medical records stating medical issues to include a widow maker heart attack associated to that poisoning!

Excuse me, but the "if I call the Veterans Crisis Line, the cops will show up at my door" is NOT a myth, it is a FACT. It happened to me. I was forcibly institutionalized for almost two weeks, even after swearing up and down that I was no longer a danger to myself after having called there crisis line and getting the help I called for, and talked to someone, but I was literally carried by three cops out of my door by force and then kept in an isolated room at the local hospital for over 100 hours receiving NO treatment and not allowed to speak to any doctor or patient advocate, and then taken forcibly by ambulance over seven hundred miles away to the nearest inpatient VA facility without any identification although I had begged them to get it for me and kept there until the ID was mailed to me, over a week later. This took place between April 29th, 2023, and May 11th, 2023. Do NOT call the crisis line or this could happen to you! I have not been able to get representation for this, and still live in constant fear after this has happened to me personally. Reach out if you need help, but not to 988, or the same could happen to you when you swear up and down you are not suicidal and will not hurt yourself, they will still take away your freedom for weeks possibly.

That patient advocates only advocate for the staff.
Investigations are never pursued.
All complaints and concerns are found in favor of the doctor and staff.

It is pretty obvious from the comments that I read that there are many veterans who are very much dissatisfied with the experience and treatment that the VA provides them with. I am one of them. My experience with the VA is that it is one of the most unprofessional, uncaring, disorganized organizations that I have ever encountered. It is only because I have found a few people and some departments that truly care about their veterans, that I continue to use their services.

For example, in 2019, I was seen by a Long Beach podiatrist who, while cutting my toenails, decided to remove a callus from the bottom of my big toe. While doing so, he created a wound on the bottom of my foot that took more than three years to heal. When I tried to claim service connection because of his error, the VA denied that because they said that there was never an entry in my record that he ever removed a callus.

In April of this year, I had an appointment with the Podiatry wound care clinic at the VA Long Beach because a sore had developed on my right second toe. I have a service dog, and was told by the Department head, who was running the clinic, that he was allergic to dogs and would only treat me if I allowed somebody to handle my dog outside the examination room. I said OK. Before leaving, he told me that I would have to see another doctor the following month, which I agreed to.

When I attended my May appointment, there was a sign on the check-in window that said "No Service Dogs Allowed" in the examining rooms. When I protested and told him that his actions were bulls***, the Department head kicked me out of the clinic. It took two months of complaining before I was allowed to come back in WITH MY SERVICE DOG. In the meantime, I filed a civil rights complaint with the VA more than three months ago, and I have never received an answer.

The VA is exempt from the ADA. They are, however, required to adhere to the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and I have filed a Civil Rights complaint against them, but have never received a response back. Nor can I find an attorney that is interested in taking my case. There is not enough money in it.
