Separate your enlisted "time" from your officer "time". The only time someone gets "constructive credit" is if they go into a branch and AOC when they have a number of years working at an equivalent or higher level in the civilian sector or educationally qualified at that level. This is where you get people in AMEDD coming into the Army as CPT, MAJ, LTC, and for some physician specialties where they have 20+ years of civilian practice, COL (I had the pleasure of going through Officer Basic with a world-renowned Cardiologist who was commissioned as a CO). This practice can happen in other branches, but AMEDD uses this practice more than the others.

Your enlisted time, as long as it is 4 years Compo 1 or Compo3 -AGR, gets counted toward pay only. If you were Compo3 - USAR you can get enlisted time counted toward pay if you have 1,461 retirement points (365x4 + 1 point for a leap year).

I'm sorry, I left out our Compo2 brothers and sisters. The same rule applies to them as does the Compo3 - USAR Soldiers. Points is key.

What? I'm not sure what you are asking. Prior service has nothing to do with officer promotions unless of course you have some derog in your file and in that case you won't get promoted...it's all about time. There are no BZ to 1LT or CPT. It could be shorter or longer than your peers based on dates of rank. A few days difference in peer groups dates of rank can cost up to a year difference in promotion. I know, I am one of those that ended up being on the positive side. Many of my peers are a year behind me.

Thank you for the feedback sir. The promotion requirements from 1LT to CPT states 4 years time in service, 2 years time grade. Given the delineation made between time in service and years in grade, I'm curious if my prior active duty time will fulfill the time in service requirements and allow me to be promotable after 2 years in grade as a 1LT. It would only be 6 months early with the 18 month time in service and time in grade requirement from 2LT to 1LT

It won't. But keep in mind, CPT boards are based off DOR. You gotta read the MILPER Messages (and read the historical messages as well to get an idea as to when your boards will be). With that said, it's not always "2 years".

MAJ (Join to see) - Are you certain that he doesn't get credit for enlisted time in service? I'll check to make sure, but I believe that I promoted as soon as I hit the time in grade since I had almost 3 years in before I commissioned.

Enlisted "time" does not count for Commissioned Officer "time" (pay, yes) But that's not to say the things that you did as an enlisted Soldier won't help. Time is time. And timing is everything. If you fall out of the promotion zone by one day (and I know people who have) you have to wait an entire year. Conversely, if you had a DOR of 31 Mar, and come out on the list, you would make CPT kinda technically earlier but you would have a very high sequence number. Make sense?
