Yes, civilian casualties are tragic but a price of waging total war. The fire bombings killed more Japanese that the atomic bombs did, and just as gruesomely. I am sure it sent a clear message to the Soviets as well. No doubt that was part of the calculus.
Since 1945 I would argue atomic bombs have saved more lives than they have taken by putting a lid on global conflicts, resigned war to more regional conflicts fought mostly by proxy (Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, etc.). Certainly not ideal, especially for the proxies, but since 1945 you have not seen war on a global scale that we saw in WWII and before.
