I am interested to see how all of my peers feel about this, and what the best way forward is on the plan to cut troops.

Simply put "NO".
However cutting the budget while giving corporations huge tax breaks (because they are the main supporters of both candidates) is popular among the Republican and Democratic Parties (elections are expensive when there are no campaign contribution limits). Corporations are critical in raising the hundreds of millions to run for office although I suspect there is better use for that money.
They want to say thank you to veterans without actually doing anything that could cost money. In other words saying thank you means more than acting grateful and keeping veterans with critical experience in the military, keeping salaries and benefits (that incidentally are not half of the benefits politicians enjoy like lifetime pension (earned in military after 20 years, in Congress in 4 years) and family health insurance for life (Obama Care for all politicians, None for military veterans or anyone else because that would be Communism (unless its my insurance, that a good idea, lol)) and caring for those who have returned by financially supporting the VA not just telling the VA to see more patients without hiring more providers and spending more money. Both parties are allowing the cuts and the hacking apart of the military; both.

Yup...I agree on dropping the numbers and providing an employment path for our veterans coming out of Active Duty service.

Our nation cannot afford veterans coming back from war at this time. So it makes sense only to decrease the numbers considerably, until our nation can honor the promise to take care of those veterans coming back.

Currently, our nation is dependent on many non profits and a few for-profit organizations to keep those promises alive. America's generosity is great.

The VA is not consistent with those promises due to a capacity building and confidence problem.
