Why do you suppose China persists in claiming Taiwan as its territory? It would seem to me that having your enemies retreat to an off shore location is ideal, much the same as those Confederates who refused to surrender the Civil War in the US retreated to Brazil. Good place for them. Taiwan itself has no particular value. It's wealth in based in its commercial pursuits. There are no great deposits of natural resources.

America fought a war over folks who didn’t want to be part of her anymore.
We bombed the snot out of Serbia for trying to hold on to Kosovo...
We condemn China for wanting Taiwan (when Japan has the last legal claim)
And no matter how little sense it makes, we won’t let Mexico have California south of the Tehachapis....

China put it into their Constitution that Taiwan is theirs, and no leader may give it away. This puts any China leader in a bind if they say it should be free.
