As an "amateur" historian... I sometimes chafe at the suggestion Washington was responsible for "starting" the French and Indian War. More accurately, the Seven Years' War was inevitable, and Washington merely had the misfortune to be among the first officers to become engaged on the frontier. I also resist the current narrative portraying the young Washington as any less competent than his peers. Alexander the Great he was not... but neither were many of his contemporaries at the same age and relative experience. In my personal opinion, the two greatest "weaknesses" that he possessed then... and retained into his middle age, were the feelings of inadequacy and "incompleteness" at having never held commission in the British regular Army... and his lack of conviviality with the sort of men he always seemed to be placed in command of, and who would ultimately provide him his greatest victories.
