Catch 22. If we stay then we are prolonging the longest lasting armed conflict that we have ever been in. It has been going on almost long enough for children of those who enlisted after the attacks of September 11th 2001 to start enlisting. On the other hand, if we abandon Afghanistan before they have at least a somewhat stable government then we risk seeing it fall back to where it was before. This is partly why Nation Building is such a bad idea anyway.

We could be there forever and they will not have a stable government that represents all the factions and is not corrupt.

1SG Russell S. I agree, that is why I put the qualifier of somewhat on there. Unfortunately it is likely going to need to be a dictator who can keep stability through use of force. Not even close to ideal, but likely a reality.

True that. Sad to say many of our "democratic nation building" capers failed in Africa and the Mideast because force is all that region knows or respects.
