Two soldiers with the 101st Airborne Division were the first to receive the military's new Operation Inherent Resolve campaign medal this week in Iraq.
Defense Secretary Ash Carter awarded Spc. Ariana Martinez and Sgt. Curtis Bluel with the campaign medal as part of his visit to Iraq on Monday. The medal was announced in March and is awarded to soldiers who have deployed to Iraq and Syria in support of operations against Islamic State militants.
To qualify for the medal, soldiers must spend at least 30 consecutive days in Iraq or Syria or a total of 60 nonconsecutive days. The 30-day minimum is waived for soldiers evacuated as a result of injury from combat.
