I will be transitioning to Fort Hood, Texas this fall. I would appreciate any insight in the quality of on-base housing for SR NCOs, and the best/safest neighborhoods or communities to live in off-post. I would prefer to live on base, but am definitely looking for suggestions and recommendations as this will be my first time there. Thank you for your time and support.

So on post has issues with leaks and all sorts of other fun all over. Mold has gotten to the point the housing contractors are bribing residents to keep their mouth shut. My wife has friends whom have dealt with this 1st hand.

Off post, Copperas Cove is close, quiet and pretty cheap. It’s a nice area. Killeen is a Military town, and Harker heights is nice but a bit more expensive.

I’ve been here for 2 years ish. Feel free to drop me a message with questions!

Thanks, I truly appreciate the insight. On-post sounds like a bundle of problems I’d rather not deal with then. As I close in on my leave and report date I’ll probably drop you a few messages about specific neighborhoods. Thanks again.

Yeah, there are a couple stars involved now but its like playing whack a mole.

I’ll be around. Feel free to drop a line with any questions, only thing I’m not super savvy with is the school systems. Have a great rest of your evening 1SG

Way back in 1971, I opted for Copperas Cove and rented a home in a quiet community. SP4 surrounded by Senior EM, Commissioned Officers, but when at home, rank wasn't an issue. Went back a few years ago and found that the empty space between Killeen and Copperas Cove was filled with shopping centers and other businesses. The home I rented is now part of their library on Carpenter Avenue.

I know a lot of people who really like copperas cove and Harker heights. Belton/Temple is where I opted to live and I absolutely love it here. It’s about a 30 minute commute but it’s a great community and I think is just far enough to where it doesn’t feel like a military town. Plus, there’s a fantastic hospital in Temple that has been great for my family. Not to mention crime rates are much lower (crime still exists but it seems that closer to post=more crime). I wouldn’t touch on-post housing with a 10-foot pole personally. Between mold, gas leaks, faulty HVAC and long wait times for work orders, Fort Hood family housing is known to be exceedingly horrible. Good luck 1SG and welcome to the Great Place

Thank you, that’s extremely valuable information, as my wife is a nurse - so Temple will definitely be on our viewing list. Yea, from yours and previous comments - on post housing seems atrocious. Thanks again.

Live off post but it’s more expensive but the newer development areas are best. So off clear creek and post side of cove and north most cove.
