Hello fellow service members... I am getting ready to
transition to the civilian world and in the course of my preparations came
across this little gem: "Deployment to Employment: A Guide for Military
Veterans Transitioning to Civilian Employment" by Russ Hovendick.  I strongly recommend this book to all ranks
getting ready to leave the service.  It
is really helping me! Russ has done an excellent job of laying out the
challenges facing service members who are getting ready to make their
transition.  He offers insightful
solutions to problems we all will face and effective methodologies to advance
one's career search through networking, research, interview preparation, resume
preparation, and continued and dogged commitment to one's job search.  He does not promise a “rose garden” and never
says the career switch will not take a lot of work.  Rather, he lays out a guide to the tough
terrain that is out there and offers us some experienced based tricks as to how
we might best master our career switch.

Although he was never in the service, Russ has worked with
many ex-military job seekers so he knows the pitfalls and the potential lack of
confidence that we may face.  He also
provides specific hints that will more than cover the cost of your purchase
(e.g. tuition discounts on job training, where to get free business
cards).  His mock interview questions --
of which he lists a few and has yet more on his web site -- and his structure
for laying out one's skills really help to prepare one for the questions that
one will be asked so that one can have sharp, informative, and on target
answers that address that the interviewer is really seeking to discover.  The author manages to convey all this and
more information in a cogent, powerful and yet truly humble fashion, often
acknowledging that he does not know what we have been through.   He is clearly out to help servicemen and
women in their transition.    There are a
lot of videos, too, that he provides links to where he speaks to the subject
matter and that help to really cement all the material into one’s mind.  The ideas, tricks of the interview trade, the
emphasis on continued optimism in one’s job search are equally appropriate for
enlisted, junior, and senior officers preparing for leaving or that have just
left the service.  And he will answer
your emails and does take phone calls!
I strongly recommend you take a look at this book.

I have actually used craigslist to find housing for veterans and help them transition.
