It actually was fought by mostly Volunteers. Look it up.

What do you mean “sided with”. No one in my unit or squad were divided on issues. We were there to protect each other first and foremost. We weren’t too interested in the politics. The only thing that concerned us was the attitude America had towards the military serving in Vietnam. You sound like you were probably in Vietnam during the 70’s as the war was winding down and our military had more time on their hands.

I respectfully disagree - During the Vietnam War, about two-thirds of American troops volunteered, while the remaining one-third were selected for military service through the draft. This means that approximately 65% of soldiers serving in Vietnam were volunteers.

The ratio of volunteers to draftees was around 2:1 during this conflict. Although the draft system only accounts for 25% of the military force in combat zones, it influenced many young American men to volunteer for the armed forces to have more choices in their service.

Divided - The men I knew and know today who were in combat and close support were more concerned about each other and disliked the political garbage in the States. People like Hanoi Jane and John Kerry did much to stir the pot and create discord.
