I know at USAFA there was a program for enlisted with stellar performance records where they could secure an appointment - 170 seats are open. I thinks its the LEAD Program. As well commanders and chiefs are encouraged to nominate superior performing airmen. We had a number of prior service mixed in the class.

Thanks SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL for highlighting the fact that each year prior service Army soldiers become members of the USMA corps of cadets.
When I entered USMA, West Point as a cadet in July 1976 there were about 100 of us that were prior service Army. Two of my friends and classmates had been Army rangers as NCOs before they came to West Point. [In those day there were two Ranger Battalions. Second ranger battalion was formed in October 1974.]
Many were jump qualified before they became cadets. A couple close friends completed Ranger school during the summer between sophomore [yearling] and junior [cow] years.
