When I learned to trust my joes I transitioned from a manager to a leader.

There is a fine edge there that some can't see. We have to give not just the responsibility to our reports, but also the authority for them to succeed. The micro managers seem never to be able to give the authority and then stand by it.

I’ve had the unfortunate experience of working for several micro managers (not in the military) and it’s the one trait in a supervisor I cannot tolerate. I don’t have time to fluff a supervisor’s ego and make them feel safe because they have problems and need to feel in complete control over every aspect of their little kingdom. People don’t trust micro managers. They don’t like micro managers. They tolerate them out of fear and to avoid harassment and retribution.

I view this as being the difference between a supervisor and a manager. I view a supervisor as sometimes needing to stand knee deep in their people when needed to ensure tasks are performed properly. Managers have to make assignments and be able to turn around and totally focus on the next issues to keep their organizations going.
