Assistant Director STEM Career Advising

Position Summary:

The Assistant Director coaches and advises students, individually and in groups, on issues related to career planning strategies in STEM fields related to both undergraduate and graduate students. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter who evaluates student and corporate partner needs, develops strategies, and proactively takes appropriate action as a result. The Assistant Director is responsible for tracking, auditing, and analyzing internship and placement outcomes with high attention to detail and accountability. The Shevet Glaubach Center uses a career communities model for advising and individuals applying for this role will be considered based on both best fit for the department and with the most applicable experience for leading one of our Communities.

Position Responsibilities:
Must demonstrate the ability to work as a team member; to think creatively and to evaluate and improve existing process and procedures
Create and lead individualized career strategy sessions and group educational programs for students in the natural sciences and technology, through in person, virtual and online resources
Pilot innovative approaches for building partnerships and engaging employers with a mindset for understanding the needs of an international student population, the work authorization process for international candidates, and opportunities within assigned fields for both men and women
Implement a career community approach; partner with faculty and alumni to provide a holistic career strategy while in school and for post-graduation, leading to the beginning of an impactful career, whether it be great job and/or the acceptance into a master’s program and/or terminal degree
Use historical employer data on accepted employment offers to further develop employer relationships going forward, creating stronger employer relationships and opportunity pipelines
Leverage employer connections within alumni community to connect students to those who can promote/prepare them
Educate students on both traditional career preparedness topics as well as those relating specifically to assigned fields; evaluate gaps in student engagement and skill sets; create and execute plans to establish connections with student population and equip students with necessary competencies
Think creatively and proactively about professional development and career search experience for graduate students
Facilitate career courses for assigned fields, drawing upon alumni and other industry leaders to provide panels and guest lectures about how their education translated into a career

Experience & Education Background:
2+ years work experience in Professional Development, Human Resources, HR Training, Campus Recruitment or Career Advising; strong and demonstrable knowledge and understanding of different advising fields and student populations as per job description; ability to develop productive advising relationships
Experience needed working with a career services manager, preferable Symplicity or Handshake
Employer relationship development must be verified with provided industry references
Prior work experience building employer relations in a higher education setting for student populations
Efficacy in creating student career strategies that lead to intended outcomes
Skills & Competencies:
Must demonstrate the ability to work as a team member; to think creatively; and to evaluate and improve existing process and procedures
Must have strong and polished interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills
Must be able to comprehend and follow a diverse set of verbally communicated operational procedures with little guidance or training, self-manageable
Must have an extensive understanding, familiarity, and experience with career coaching/professional development of assigned student populations
Must be comfortable and professional in conducting business. Position demands significant attention to detail, outstanding effective communication and interpersonal skills, an upbeat and energetic attitude, substantial team collaboration, as well as a sense of initiative and can-do approach and working some evenings
The willingness to respond to the needs of students and employers in an increasingly technologically- oriented society
The ideal candidate possesses prior experience working in an HR department, consulting, campus recruitment functions, and/or providing professional development, and/or career coaching in the assigned fields
Salary Range:
$70,000-$73,000
