AMEDD Reserve 70 series officers that recently branch transferred.

What branch did you transfer to and how has it been so far (BOLC, AOC course, etc)?

I am a 70D, recently completed BOLC but already have a 1x non-select and need to either gamble with my career at the FY23 board or submit a branch transfer in the next few weeks!!

So, if you've recently left AMEDD from the 70 series.....share how things are working out (DM if you're open to a call).

I've heard move to the basic branch and BOLC isn't required but I'm sure there's some type of mandatory training on their side?

You can sort and filter on various AOC/Rank, and Locations to get a sense where the opportunities are.

If you've been passed over for CPT in the Reserves in your AOC then I'd bail ASAP. I can't even imagine what trying to get MAJ would be like.

That said, I am personally seeing 70's come into the QM and LG ranks left and right. So I get it.

You'd need to take the corresponding new CCC for the branch transfer thereby lining you up for MAJ. I guess it's more or less a trial by fire because in lickety split time you'd be an LG MAJ with minimal LG company grade exposure.

So where you missed getting CPT as a 70, we in Logistics our CPT board was a mere formality (did we at least submit a complete packet). The Sec Army Milper that went out basically said 100% promoted that are fully qualified. Which means if all the boxes are checked we got promoted. 1) BOLC complete, 2) 4 year college degree complete, 3) not flagged in any way. POOF CPT.

I'm in a current unit with MAJ and LTC vacancies in my AOC above me. It's not unreasonable to think I couldn't finish out the remainder of my time here.

So my take on the USAR is we are all doing the exact same thing during Battle Assemblies regardless of MOS/AOC.

I believe we are better off in units who's mission is our MOS/AOC. It would suck to be the MI guy in a LG unit because you're only doing clearances and not actual Intel work. It would suck to be the supply guy in any non Sustainment unit because you're just tracking the unit's property, and not actually running supply for larger missions.

So whatever new AOC you pursue your contentment is going to be driven by the unit itself, and not the AOC. In my current AOC I was in one unit slated to attend NTC the following THREE YEARS!!!!!!!!!! for annual training before I transferred to my current unit. Now..... I have a choice between two different AT missions (Spring or Summer), OR!!!!!!!!!!! I can do just about anything I want that eats up my AT days (such as an entirely new CCC or random mission that comes down the pipe).

So I'm saying here again, that the right UNIT is more important than the right AOC, especially for the Reserves. If you want to get aggressive career wise then you have to balance out your civilian obligations. It can quickly turn against you with conflicts with little room to compromise.

Sir, thank you for the response. I agree and appreciate your response. When I direct commissioned in (late 2019) I didn't realize it was going to be an up hill battle! I rushed to complete mandatory training within my 36 month window with the plan to keep moving as expected only to get hit with this over strength obstacle shortly after.

I am BOLC complete, but am trying to also figure out what is required after branch transfer to be promotable (is there a 90A course I would immediately have to go to also?).

As I'm sure you know, balancing civilian and military time can be a delicate task so I'm trying to get a realistic look at what is on the horizon with this change.

1LT (Join to see) - I think all you need to really do is find a vacancy, then call the commander of said vacancy and then get put in that 90A position, then from there, they can send you to a 90A Captains Course. Then, after that....... you do a personnel action with all your CCC graduation certificates and that's that, you have a new branch.

I make it sound easy, but that's the mechanics of it.

To do CCC in the USAR one has to complete the common core Distance Learning, and one can only do that by going through your training NCO and getting enrolled. Then when common core is done your Training NCO can register you for CCC phase 1 and phase 2.

But for all the doors to open one first has to be sitting in a slot that needs said CCC training, which means finding a 90A opening (which is easy enough).

It should go without saying, but you'll probably want to be current on your APFT/ACFT and Height/Weight and LHI appointments.

I was personally able to execute finishing CCC in 6 months from start to finish. Did distance learning common core in December, and by mid June my Phase 1 and Phase 2 courses were done, but I didn't have to transfer and I just lined up my ducks and knocked it out.

I think you need to get on top of this as soon as you can. The clock doesn't stop until you have a DA1059 in your hand from a new Branch CCC that isn't over strength, and the mechanics of this takes months and months.

That said........... and maybe it's pointless since you have already been passed over once for CPT........ one could take effectively 5-7 years to finish CCC. There is no regulation that says you have to finish the phases and distance learning portion of it in any amount of time. You just need to beat the promotional pass over clock. But you'd need to be in a Branch that isn't over strength and where you could sit as a CPT forever.

Ty, I'm tracking that. I looked at vacancies yesterday and am on DL. I am planning on reaching out to some of the units today to get moving! I plan on knocking out the DL component pretty fast and thankfully also have the support of my BN CDR in getting this transfer done given the AMEDD risk

Sir, you may want to go ahead and Branch Transfer. I would not recommend gambling with the AOC you currently have since you've already been passed once. Don't look at 70B, either. Usually very very very over strength. Do you qualify for 72D Environmental Science Officer? The Reserves is usually hurting for that AOC.

I branch transferred to Civil Affairs, it’s way better and the unit is so much more functional and has more field missions, ranges, and a much higher morale and sense of purpose. The transfer process has been expedited and only took about a month.
