They have no specific reason just said legal already reviewed the order and cleared it.

If Legal cleared it, then it is a legal and valid order. What can possibly be happening is that the Leadership is wanting to verify that their Soldiers living off post are actually living under a roof and not homeless/living out of their vehicle.

I was thinking of a reason, and this might be a possible one.

Waaaay back when, BAH used to be limited to actual rent/lease costs so it would actually be required for the servicemember to provide what their housing costs were.

However, when the FMR was changed, eligibility of BAH is solely determined by the number of dependents and if housing is provided to the servicemember by the government.

COL Randall C. - That's now how BAH is issued though. It's based on cost of living wherever you're stationed. There's with and without dependent rates so it doesn't matter if a servicemember has dependents or not. For the Army, when you reach SSG, you get BAH even without dependents. I had BAH without dependents from when I got SSG in 2009 and then when I had my daughter and got married got dependent rate in 2014. So 2009 - 2014 I had BAH without dependent rate.

SFC (Join to see) - I'm not sure how to read your comments. Were you agreeing with me or did you think I posted something else and were correcting me?

Your statement, "There's with and without dependent rates so it doesn't matter if a servicemember has dependents or not." is a bit confusing. It DOES matter if you have dependents as that determines which rate you are paid at.

As for the rank, is has nothing to do with eligibility. If the government provides you housing, then you generally aren't eligible (there are some unique situations that are exceptions), but if they don't, then you generally are (again, some unique exceptions).

Rereading your reply, it's possible that you're talking about oranges when I was talking about apples (assuming "That's now how BAH is issued though" is a typo and should be "That's not how BAH is issued though" ... seemed to change the entire context of the first half of your response). I was talking about eligibility, but you seem to be talking about rates.

If you are claiming BAH for that location it makes sense. Trust but verify. Believe it or not, some in our services actually run afoul of our systems
