What type of discharge did service members get when they were kicked out for being gay?

If they received anything besides honorable, are they eligible to have their discharge upgraded now that it's widely accepted to serve and be openly gay?

So I was originally kicked out for homosexuality. It depends on the situation. If it was homosexual acts by omission (that is you said you were gay) then depending on your record, assuming no ART 15s and the like then it was an honorable discharge with a RE code of 3. So it all depends on the situation that occurred around your discharge. I am free to go to the VA have my DD214 changed to remove "homosexual acts (by omission)" and my RE code however, since the policy is changed what does it matter? I came back in after a 10 year break in service without an issue.

Just to mention as I am not gay but I see it in military law books as all issue for acting or performing any kind of those act will lead to a dishonorable discharge.they are hard to upgrade.like I had said I have no relations to this motive.

The discharge actually depending on the type of conduct (admission vs. act) and your service record. I received an honorable and I know of 2 others who received Honorable as well.

Most people discharged for any purpose or misconduct of being a or involved in homosexual actions will be dishonorablely discharged.as it recommemends.
