Regard your soldiers as your children, and they will follow you into the deepest valleys; look on them as your own beloved sons, and they will stand by you even unto death.

It’s easy to regard them as children when more than half act like children.

Treat them like adults and see that they'll act like adults. Be the example that you want them to be and you'll see that they'd rather please you than disappoint you. A young soldier is a blank slate that will become what you make of it.

SSG (Join to see) true in theory and hopefully in practice. But I have seen where I treat them like adults and give them numerous chances for improvement....but quick a few these past few years can't let go of their civilian goofy and carefree side. They are in two of their six drilling years and counting down when they go IRR. Sadly even in the civilian world, being an example is so broad that the role model of "what to be" also can have a "what not to be," or "this way is more fun and easier." Of course this is my experience but I hope for a day/enlistment in which I treat them right and they pay it back.
