This is a combat jump that is relatively unknown by most Americans. Did they accomplish their mission? Although historians are divided, I believe they did.

IIRC there used to be a DZ at Ft Bragg named for Salerno.

Photos exist of men wearing 5th Army patches under "AIRBORNE" tabs on their WW II paratrooper uniforms. I'm wondering if this is the outfit those Troopers were from.

Was trying to recall if Salerno DZ had an alternate name if you reversed the direction of flight like Gela is to Sicily DZ.

DZ Sicily had the same name from ANY direction AFAIK... the direction-dependent naming is news to me!

MAJ Tom Hutton - Yes it has an alternate name if flown from the opposite direction - it is Volturno when flown South to North.

Served in C. Co. 1/509th Airborne (Bn. Combat Team) in Vicenza, Italy 01/74-03/77. Best assignment of my 21 year career.
