I’m PCS’ing to Korea in October this year for 12 months, with a HAAP to Ft Hood. Since I’ll be going unaccompanied to korea, I’m planning on getting my wife and two kids moved to the Ft. hood area before I leave. My son is autistic and my daughter has aspbergers syndrome, so I’m looking for good areas to live in so that my wife has peace of mind while she’s there. I’ve been to hood before, but it’s been almost ten years and I know it’s changed quite a bit. What do you all suggest/recommend?

Harker Heights area and Clear Creek area all the way down towards the airport. Both are good areas.
Food for thought: I just wanted you to know that even though you have a HAAP, it is not 100% guaranteed. If the priority for your MOS is higher at another base upon your DEROS or if you get your promotable status, your branch will send you to the higher priority assignment. Unfortunately I’ve seen this happen many, many times regardless if you’ve moved your family to the HAAP location. Make sure you start communicating with your branch when you are in the 6 month window. Good luck to you...

SFC (Join to see) is correct! You could be sent somewhere else at the end of your tour.

Harker heights. Lots of shopping, safe, and the highway is close so you can get anywhere pretty close.

Try Harker Heights on the South side of I-14(old 190). It’s a nice area and quiet, plus you will be near the East gate and that’s close to 1ACB where you will most likely work. I can’t comment specifically on your family needs because I don’t know which schools in the area would be best for your children. I would imagine that a quieter neighborhood would be best. You would have to see how far South of the highway you would need to be so that your children couldn’t hear activity on the ranges.
