Have you looked into the trades yet? They need good people in the industry that has structure and discipline. The pay is great and you will always have a job.

Nothing wrong with working with your hands. People who go home at the end of the day covered in grease and dirt are who helped make this Nation great. It's the ones in suits and ties that screwed everything up!

I really struggled with this when I left in 1996. I was fed up with the field I had been working in and wanted a complete break. It took me almost 10 years to settle into a new career I was happy with: Christian ministry.
After a stint as a British Army Chaplain the transition was much easier. I simply went into parish ministry.
The whole experience did teach me one thing though. At first I was intent on getting a great salary in a job with a lot of respectability. What a mistake that was! Going after a higher salary and status made me miserable. It wasn't until I started listening to my heart that I really settled down.
My advice to anyone getting out of the service is to 1) talk to your spouse if you have one, 2) decide if job or location is more important, and 3) make a plan and work to it. Be really flexible on the short term stuff, a little more rigid on the medium term stuff and completely fixated on the long term goal. Review and revise as circumstances dictate.
It may take you a little time and a some job hopping to finally get to where you want to be. But when you get there the view will be great. One warning though: keep your spouse involved and invested in the process if you want to still have a marriage when you get there!
