PV2 G,
I'm a Brigade S6 and have traveled through/past FT Riley several times. I can't comment about the area, but a few things when you get to your unit. If you are lucky you'll end up in the brigade signal company, otherwise you'll be in a Battalion S6 shop. My expectations when I was a company command and now as a MAJ for new Soldiers right out of AIT are that you are motivated to learn your job and help out with whatever taskings come your way. If you end up in a battalion s6 shop, you'll need to learn every other 25 series MOS tasks from loading radios, troubleshooting computer issues, as well as your own job of setting up an STT and CPN. If you can get any professional certificates in Security+, network+, or A+ that will help you in the long run. In the Signal Company, it is a little easier since everyone is a 25. There you will need to focus on learning how your equipment fits into the bigger picture. you could be on a HCLOS team or JNN STT or even a SMART-T if you have them. In a BCT network nothing ever goes as smoothly as it does in the school house. You'll really need to focus on crew drills with your team leader and setting up your equipment as quickly and efficiently as possible then troubleshooting your connections to the other network systems.

My advice: Learn to enjoy what is available available in the immediate area. Manhattan has a great local music scene. If you are an outdoorsman, there is ample opportunity for hunting and fishing. Last I was there, the post outdoor rec center had plenty of boats, and campers to rent, as well as a clay range (bring your own ammo).

A weekend in KC sounds fun until your car breaks down, or you get stuck in the snow.

Warnings: The outlet store on Washington sells low quality gear.
Pat's pawn and gun in Ogden is staffed by idiots.
If Silverados is still open, avoid it like the plague. That bar only seems to exist for college kids to pick fights with troops.
776-5577: you will learn to hate it.
The rest is probably universal advice. If the advertising targets military, avoid it. If it's not a bank don't take out a loan.

Some of my intel is likely out of date; I haven't spent much time in the area in the last 7 years.
PV2 G.,

The best advice I could give is focus on doing your job the best you can, try and get as much college under your belt during your free time to help cut down on the time there is to get into trouble because of being bored, because believe me you will get bored, you are out in the middle of nowhere at Riley.

You are 2-2/12 hrs. from KC, about an hour from Topeka, an hour from Salina, Manhattan is only 30 minutes away and is a college town, but many young Soldiers get in trouble there with the locals that are not too fond of the military members coming to their clubs, etc., Junction City which is just outside Riley is nothing but trouble no matter how you look at it, typical town connected to a military base, avoid as much as possible.

There are activities on post but depending on the time of year, cold as hell winters, hot as hell summers, it varies.

Like I said originally it is the perfect place to get a college degree completed. Good luck and stay safe.

I never served at Riley, but I am familiar with the region. I have relatives all over the KC, Topeka, Lawrence, and Manhattan area. As James stated, a great place to work on your education. Kansas State is a good engineering and science school and KU in Lawrence is a top notch school. You also have access to the community college system in Kansas which is one of the finest in the country and their credits transfer to the universities. If you are into a liberal arts degree, you have Washburn University in Topeka which is an excellent school for a liberal arts degree. Like James also stated, college towns and GIs are not a good mix. The college boys are threatened by the mere presence of a warrior. The have self esteem issues when they have to match up with a soldier. lol Good luck.

Thank you Sargeants for your advice. I'm very excited to get working on my job. No worries about the college guys and soldier mix. Not my scene anyways. Thank you for your wise words and honored to be a part of the greatest fighting force alive.
