Recognized as an expert in surgical smoke plume hazards, I have traveled internationally to speak on the subject to groups and organizations such as Association of PeriOperative Registered Nurses (AORN), Operating Room Nurses Association of Ontario (ORNAO), American Association of Occupational Health Nurses (AAOHN), International Laser Safety Conference (ILSC), Operating Room Nurses Association of Canada (ORNAC), The European Operating Room Nurses Association (EORNA), Danish Medtech Congress (DMTS), Finnish OR Nurses Association (FORNA), and the New Zealand Nurses organization Perioperative College (NZNO). I also speak to many local chapters of AORN on the topic.
I have over 25 years of experience as an operating room registered nurse with expertise in most major specialties, including Ortho, Neuro, Vascular, General, Urology, ENT, Plastics, and GYN. and
I have authored or co-authored training programs including: Fire Safety in the Operating Room, Electrosurgical Safety, Energy Based Devices and Tissue Interaction, Laser safety and operators course.
I have also volunteered many hours as a firefighter/EMT, Recovery and Rescue Diver, Hunter Education Master Instructor, Wilderness First Aid and Survival instructor, and Firearms Safety Instructor.
I am a retired army nurse corp officer with one combat tour in Desert Storm, experienced in field hospital care as well as emergency field care. I have training in combat casualty care as well as management of chemical and biological casualties.
