Military Experiences

1973 - Sep 1974
WTBN
USMC Shooting Team Competitor
Part-time competitor on the USMC High Power Rifle Team, and also performed Rifle Team Admin Support. Upon seperation I had the 2nd MOS of 8531; Marksmanship Instructor, in addition to being an '01'. Enjoyed being a 'Lethal Skilled POG'. Had enlisted to go to Nam to "kill Communists" but it was not to be...no choice with a 2 year enlistment, so Remington Raider it was to be...
Feb 1973 - Apr 1973
Unit Diary Clerk
Arrived after completing Unit Diary School at Parris Island. However, was sent TAD to the 2nd MAW Shooting Team at MCAS, Cherry Point, NC, due to high rifle qualification score to compete for the 2nd MAW. Was later 'picked-up' by the USMC Shooting Team from WpTrnBn, MCB, Quantico, VA. After TAD returned briefly to MABS-31, but within a month or 2 I was PCS to the Shooting Team at MCB, Quantico, VA
Aug 1972 - Nov 1972
Basic Trainee
Basic training as a Marine Recruit. My Platoon was under the Leadership of SDI SSgt. Joseph C. CHILES. He went on to retire as a Captain of Marines, and we are very good friend to this day! I was meritoriously promoted to PFC / E-2 upon graduation. When beginning boot camp I had completed one year of college, I could type well, and I was 21 but looked 12! I served the Platoon as the 'Key Private', 'Artist', 'Assistant Scribe'. Shot expert with the awesome M-14, and my Platoon took every trophy / competition in our series except one. It was almost a clean sweep. It was an awesome life changing experience which was a rebirth indeed!
