Bio
Left the Navy on 12 August 1977, started new job with the Tennessee Valley Authority on 15 August 1977. I was hired as a Journeyman Instrumentation Technician (TVA called them Mechanics). In my 24 year career, I worked in three power plant, one coal fired and two nukes, Browns Ferry and Sequoyah. During most of my time at Sequoyah I was an instructor.
Military Experiences
Jan 1970 - May 1973
Submarine Missile Technician
Our crew maintained our Polaris missiles at a 99.9% availability to launch. Our MT gang was proud of that accomplishment. We had a great bunch of shipmates.
Deployments
(7 years, 10 months)Jul 1976 - Aug 1977
USS Hunley AS-31
My only experience on a Navy surface vessel. I was sure I "ain't in Kansas anymore!" We actually had Saturday morning personnel inspections on that tube. I wasn't accustomed to such on a submarine. I did enjoy my year on her. I lived aboard ship, which for an MT1SS was the great. I qualified as a missile crane operator, which was the best.
May 1973 - Jul 1976
USGMS Dam Neck, VA
Instructor in the Missile Technician "C" school. Area was guidance, flight control and MTRE.
Jan 1970 - May 1973
USS John Marshall SSBN-611 Gold
Qualified in submarines 12 June 1970 on board SSBN-611. Qualified to stand all Missile Technician watch stations. At the end of my second patrol I was told to qualify as Chief of the Watch (BCP).
